Lauren paced the cave most of the day while Rowan was lost to dreams. She could only hope his body was just adjusting to the change of time and place. The boys had gone with Tsul’Kalu to talk with the Templars. Her back was aching and nothing she did seemed to bring any comfort. Even a cup of Tsul’Kalu’s tea didn’t ease it, though it did soothe her enough to allow her to lie down next to Rowan and rest for a short while.

Late in the afternoon, the boys returned. “Come see what Henry found,” Jamie said, coming over to her. In his arms, he held the largest rabbit Lauren had ever seen. It seemed perfectly tame. It didn’t flinch when Lauren sat up and reached to pet it.

“What did you think of Tsul’Kalu’s story about how the rabbit was the leader in all the mischief?”

“It’s my favorite story,” Henry said, petting the rabbit.

“I like why the buzzard is bald, too,” Jamie said.

“Is Dad still asleep?” Henry scowled, glancing at the lump beneath the furs beside his mother.

“Yes,” Lauren said. “What about Sinclair and his men?”

“Tsul’Kalu has made them stew and sent us to bring you down to eat,” John Carter said.

“I can’t leave your father,” Lauren said.

“He says Dad will wake up soon and you should come down,” Henry said. “He said there are clothes for him in a basket at the back of the cave.”

Lauren nodded and gave the bunny another scratch behind the ears. “Go on then,” Lauren said. “Eat your supper and help Tsul’Kalu. Dad and I will be down later.”

Lauren lay back down beside Rowan, yawning. It was a long while later when she realized Rowan’s eyes were open and he was staring at her. She rolled over inspecting him.

A drowsy curl lifted the corner of his lips. “You’re still here,” he said, his voice gruff.

“I promised,” she answered. “How’s your head?”

“Better.”

“Good,” she said. “Are you hungry?”

“Uh, huh.” His hand snaked over the swell of her belly, as he pulled her into him, his lips capturing hers. He hesitated and drew back, lifting the covers to inspect her. “Did you get ... bigger?” His hand spread over her swollen abdomen, as if taking measurements.

“Uh, hello. I am pregnant.”

“You weren’t this pregnant the last time I saw you,” he said.

Lauren sat up on her elbows. She drew the calico taut over her stomach. Her navel protruded overtly beneath the cloth.

“Rowan,” she started, but hesitated. “I don’t know how to explain this ...”

“You can start with telling me where you’ve been the past few days,” he said.

“I’ve been here the whole time,” she said, her hand going to the cavern overhead.

“What?” Rowan scowled, throwing off the covers, realizing he was naked. He snatched back the furs to cover himself. “I searched this cavern for hours. I called your name until I was hoarse.”

“There are clothes in the basket there.” Lauren nodded to a dark corner. Rowan rose taking the fur to cover himself. It took a moment for his legs to steady.
