CHAPTER 40

Tara James looked at her pay-as-you-go phone in the street light. The corner she was standing on had a tree leaning over a fence, and she could merge in the shadows, hidden from passing cars. She wore make-up and had washed and dried her hair. She felt the dampness, then looked at the bright red of her fingernails. She checked her phone again. 8.30pm. He was late. She thought of calling him, but then decided against it. Fewer calls, the better, he always said. In fact, he kept his phone turned off and the battery separate, most times. Every month, he bought Tara a new phone, like the one she had now.

She heard the screech of brakes and looked up expectantly. Her heart fluttered wildly. The black BMW was waiting, engine running. Deep bass music sounded from inside. She could see his silhouette, and he was looking at the rear-view mirror. Tara looked around her, then opened the passenger side door quickly. The familiar smell of leather and a masculine cologne enveloped her. She strapped herself in. Without a word, he pulled out into traffic.

He spoke after a while. “Anyone seen you?”

Tara shook her head. “No.”

“That woman who ran after you two nights ago. Did you find out who she was?”

“No,” Tara lied. She couldn’t tell him the truth. He would go apeshit. He was scary when angry, and the total opposite when in a good mood. Jekyll and Hyde. She had read that book in the library.

“You need to find out, OK?” His voice took a hard edge.

Tara nodded. “I will. She comes to talk to us now and then, check on our studies. Like some people do, you know.”

She looked at his face, lit up by the lights from the dashboard, and the occasional headlight of a passing car. He remained impassive. He was so handsome. She looked away, her heart racing. He drove until they came to a block of council estates. He drove inside and followed the narrow paths until he came to a clearing, surrounded by tall council apartment buildings. Lights blazed in the open-air balconies. He stopped the car. He reached inside his pocket and took out a plastic packet. Inside it, several small paper wrappings were present. He took out four and gave them to her. She took them, feeling her heart thump against her ribs.

“Hey,” he said. She looked at him. His normally bright eyes were hidden in the dim light. She could make out his strong jaw, the slight stubble on his cheeks. He smelled nice, like he always did.

“Sure you can do this?”

She held his eyes. “Yes, I can.”

He breathed out. “Always ask to see the money first. Real customers have the cash in hand, ready. Time-wasters and junkies make excuses. Got it?”

“Yeah.”

His voice dipped and became steely again. “I’m trusting you on this, big time. Come back down straight away. If this goes as planned, then we can party.” He stared at her, then the corners of his lips twitched.
