THE MÜLLERS

We catch Gene just as he and Ray are turning into a building. The building looks like a miracle. Everything around it is rubble, yet it stands like a little beacon of hope. It’s small, a two-story structure with a restaurant on the ground floor and what I suppose is the owner’s living quarters above.

Ray introduces us to a man who must be the owner. He introduces himself as Felix and quickly busies himself with preparing our food. The restaurant is almost empty, the only patrons are a couple of soldiers in a far corner. I guess Felix’s business is mostly—if not all—soldiers. I can’t imagine that many Berliners have the means to eat out right now. I see a small woman cooking in the back; she must be Felix’s wife. Felix disappears into the kitchen and I see him reappear in the back. He leans down and kisses the woman who must be his wife. They look into each other eyes with love. I’m captivated by their interaction. Man, I need to get a grip.

“Whoa,” Gene whispers under his breath. I turn to him and see he is looking in the direction of the kitchen too. But he isn’t looking at Felix, he is looking at a girl who just came out from the back. She is carrying a tray full of water glasses and moving toward our table. I check Ray’s expression and sure enough he is also staring at the girl.

She must be in her twenties and has long blond hair braided down her back. Her eyes are large and blue. She walks with a graceful ease. Now I know why all the soldiers seem to frequent this diner. Just to confirm my theory, I check the two soldiers in the corner. They are watching the girl too.

I switch my gaze over to Felix. He has stopped his cooking and is now watching out from behind the counter, scowling at the two soldiers in the corner. He knows what’s going on, and he hovers carefully.

I smile. Felix looks like a bull ready to charge at the first sign of a move on his daughter. Li must have been following my gaze.

“Felix looks ready to destroy the first person who takes a shot at his daughter,” she says with a lilt in her voice. “By the way, you passed the test. You haven’t ogled her this whole time.”

I turn to her, confused. Whose test? Felix’s or hers? She just smiles.

“This should be fun,” she murmurs to me.

I don’t know what she means until I turn to see Ray and Gene stumbling over each other in an attempt to help the girl with the water glasses.

“Let me help you with those.”

“You look like you could use a hand.”

The girl brushes them both aside like she’s shooing away flies. She sets the drinks down on the table, all business—until she sees Li. She smiles at her and reaches out a hand.

“Hello, it is so nice to meet another woman,” the girl says and the two shake firmly.
