Heath waited until the next morning to call Mae. Telling her about her grandparents should be joyful news, but after leaving the O’Donohues’ place, he’d been consumed by anger at his father. The man hadn’t just destroyed Heath’s, Mae’s and their mother’s lives but also hurt the entire O’Donohue family, first by making their daughter disappear out of fear of him, and then retraumatizing them with the surveillance and intimidation. Hell, even Sarah’s life had been impacted through her ongoing search for him.

The whole situation was so much messier than he’d hoped. He’d wanted to just wrap stuff up, meet some family members that he could stay in occasional contact with and go home. But his mother’s family, the company stuff with the Newports, Freya...

Freya.

His head swam as he remembered making love to her in the shower the day his bike had arrived. And the next night when he’d turned up at her apartment with takeout, but the food had grown cold as they made love on her dining table. And the time here in his bedroom while Sarah had been away for the day.

He crossed to the windows of his bedroom and then frowned. When had he started thinking of this room in Sarah’s apartment as his bedroom? He really needed this call to Mae—beyond sharing the news, he needed her to ground him in the real world—his real world—again.

He pulled his cell from his pocket and called his sister, checking his watch as he did. It would be early evening there, so he had a good chance of catching her.

Mae answered immediately.

“Heath,” she yelled, but a dull roar behind her almost drowned her voice out.

He recognized the rows of bottles behind her and grinned. “You’re at my bar.”

“Well, you left Tina short-staffed by vanishing, so I’ve been doing some shifts here and there after school hours.”

“Thank you for that. How have you been?”

Mae squinted, then said, “Hang on.” She pulled the cell away and Heath got a view of a packed room, which was gratifying and made him yearn for home in equal measures.

“Tina,” Mae called. “This is Heath. I’m going to take it upstairs.”

His sister’s face appeared on the screen again, but it was wobbling as she walked up the stairs. After she shut the door to his apartment, it was quiet enough that he could hear more clearly.

“When are you coming back?” she demanded as she flopped down on his sofa.

“Shouldn’t be too much longer. Maybe in a few days.” He’d done most of the things he wanted already—found his mother’s family, visited the Bellavista office and scoped out the situation here. He just needed to have a closer look at the accounts of the inheritance that Sarah had asked him to do, and see if he could find a way to square things with the O’Donohues after the damage his father had done. Everything else could be done from home, with a visit or two back to New York when he needed.
