Happy Valley Nursing Home, a lockdown round-the-clock care facility, privately owned, forty high maintenance residents, mostly dementia with a few disabled, with two staff in attendance at any one time. There were two nurses, an RN and EN, Angela and Helen, both on call, and two supervisors, Brian and, again, Angela. There was a cook, Josie, who came in to assist with the evening meal, but otherwise the rotating staff of six: Brian, Helen, Sandra, Angela, Alan and Geoff, along with some casuals, did all the cleaning and kitchen work and laundry. Helen and Sandra were new, and Angela was relatively new, but the three men had worked at the home for years. The resident population also was relatively stable, a couple of deaths per annum amongst the older ones, readily replaced. It was basic, but it was functional, so thought Brian, who had been there the longest.

Sometime after midnight, Brian did a full round and poked his head in all the doors, and it did seem, as Alan had said, that most of the clients were awake, either on their computers or watching TV or just staring at the ceiling in the dark. It was a little strange, but he couldn’t see anything sinister in it. Like the sundowning, occasionally it happened that odd herd behavioural phenomena would sweep the home for no apparent reason.
