His mother dropped by later in the day—her first time seeing the house since Sam started working on it. She claimed she was too busy at her shop, but Sam could read between the lines. His mother was avoiding him because she felt guilty about dumping Maddie on him. Today she was subdued, her eyes red.

“Hi, Dorothy,” Katie said when she arrived. “Let me know if you need anything. But maybe…” Katie seemed to understand something was up. She met Sam’s eyes briefly. “Maybe I’ll give you two a moment. Come on Maddie, Sirius,” she said.

“What’s wrong, Mom?” Sam asked when the others had left the porch.

“I talked to Theresa last night,” she said. “She said you called her a while ago and you were having a difficult time with Maddie. She said she was always able to count on me, growing up, and she was shocked that she couldn’t rely on me now.”

“Oh, Mom, she’s not well,” Sam said, looping an arm around her shoulder and squeezing her to his side. “She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”

“She’s right, though. I haven’t been very helpful, and it’s all been on you at the same time as this house… You poor thing,” she wiped at her eyes, “…taking over the business, always getting the brunt of everything…” Sam’s eyes widened. His mother was in danger of a full Dorothy meltdown.

“Mom,” he said. “Look at me. It’s all right. You know I’ve grown to love the business. I’ve never been happier. And it’s okay for me to be a good uncle and take care of Maddie. I’m just a bit worried about her. She’s going through a rough time and she needs a lot of love. She could use more adults who love her.”

His mother stared up at him, her mascara dampened into spikes around her eyes. She took off her glasses and wiped them with her shirt. Then she pulled a pack of tissues out of her purse and blew her nose.

“I want to help,” she said, her eyes wide. “I’ll be back this afternoon for Maddie. Tell her we’re going to see a movie and go out for dinner.”

“You can come tell her yourself,” Sam said. He felt waves of relief as he led his mother into the house to find Maddie. Maybe this was an answer to their prayers.
