CHAPTER 19

Gibson drove to the office early to miss all the rush hour traffic and got to work straight away on researching the accident in fifty eight at Agecroft Pit. He re-read his notes taken at the library and the archives of the Manchester Evening News but couldn’t find out any more than he’d already discovered in his initial research.

An underground explosion had killed one man and injured twelve, trapping them at the bottom of the shaft nearly two thousand feet under the ground. The accident was caused by a misunderstanding in signalling when men at the top misinterpreted a message that the men at the bottom of the shaft had left the pit, and so they commenced the planned demolition, sending tons of debris and rock down the shaft.

Getting more detailed information, thirty two years on, who was killed and who was injured was difficult. He established that the dead and injured were not miners, but construction workers who were constructing new shafts in the mine. He sat and thought, I need to speak to someone who was working at the mine at the time – and of course Freddie might just be that person?
