“YOU’RE CRAZY.”

“Am I?”

“I just said so, didn’t I?”

“Hey, don’t shoot the messenger. Just because you happen to be attracted to a beautiful woman is no reason—”

“I’m not attracted to her.”

“Then why did you kiss her?”

“She asked me to.”

“And since when have you complied with a woman’s wishes if you didn’t want to?”

“What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about Reese Barrett. Single-minded, lives life on his own terms, lone wolf. When did you start doing anything you didn’t want to do?”

“Great, I came to you for help and all you’re giving me is more flak.”

“All I’m saying is that if you weren’t interested, she could have asked you to kiss her till the cows came home and it wouldn’t have done any good. Besides, I saw the way you looked at her across the dinner table the first night she was here.”

Calmer now, Reese shrugged. “No sin in looking.”

“Absolutely not. I plan on indulging in a few harmless glances myself between now and the time they pray over me.”

“Just because she’s pretty doesn’t mean...” Reese thought for a moment, tempted to tell Cade about his pen pal, then shook his head. “She’s just not what I had in mind.”

“For what, a bed partner?”

“Hey, watch it. Shea’s a lady.”

Cade grinned. “And who says ladies don’t have the same urges we men do? I happen to be married to a lady with a capital L, and I can tell you from personal experience...well, I could, but I won’t. You’ll just have to take my word. Belle’s a lady from the ground up and more than enough woman for me.”

Reese had the good grace to be embarrassed. Considering Belle was one of his best friends, that was more information than he needed. “I’m not so sure about Shea. She’s strictly business.” His hand sliced through the air in a gesture of finality.

“And you want a soft-spoken woman who will stand beside you through thick and thin, looking to you for strength and guidance, letting you make the decisions.”

Standing near the gate to the round pen, Reese leaned against the rail. As much as he hated to admit it, Cade’s description sounded a little too much like the one Shea had outlined. “Wouldn’t put it exactly like that. Maybe someone more like Belle is what I had in mind.”

On the other side of the fence, Cade burst into laughter. In fact, he laughed so hard he had to hang on to the rail for support.

“Would you tell me what’s so damned funny?” Reese asked when Cade finally got control of himself.

“Are we talking about the same Belle? Belle Farentino McBride, my wife?”

“Of course. She’s smart and beautiful. Kind and loving, but not afraid to stand up for what she believes. And she loves you to distraction, though God knows why.”

“Would you listen to yourself? Everything you just said about Belle applies to Shea, too. Except for lovin’ me, of course. Why do you think she and Belle have been such good friends for so many years? They’re—alike.
