CHAPTER THIRTY

Silas

What a fucking close call. I was now mentally, emotionally, and physically drained. Tonight was unforgiving in many ways, and I insisted that my team and I took the night off. Red was the most ambitious to find Nex, blaming himself for losing him during his interrogation shift, but I reassured him that everything was all right. He sabotaged our plans; we sabotaged his. Fair trade. Even if we couldn’t get the location of Rufian from him, we would catch the bastard one way or another. For now, rest.

Jezz and I took the interrogation room, and Red, Nat and Gerald took the room across it. Red complained about feeling like a third wheel whichever room he chose, but Nat said, ‘Not to worry! We’ll wait to do the nasty when you’re fast asleep!’

And no, I wasn’t paraphrasing…

Of course she couldn’t promise him that they wouldn’t be loud. Fortunately for Red, she was only kidding, or so she says…

As the team captain, Red felt it right for me and Jezz to get our own room, and I didn’t fight his decision. Once my friends and I went to our respective rooms, I jumped into the bathroom, stripped down, and had me a hot bath. I took out Xan to join, who was infuriated with me for keeping him on inventory status for so long. Even more infuriated with me for looking different! But he had adopted my scent, and he knew I was his human father.

“Heh, sorry little guy, we had a long ass night,” I said as he joined me in the bath. He lapped up the warm water with his tiny tongue, having something else other than blood and guts for a change. I watched with amusement as he splashed around in the water, his tiny wings flapping with excitement. It was hard to imagine something so small could grow into something so big with one word, and the mischievous side of me wanted to stir up some chaos by saying that word.

I scratched my chin at the thought—what if I said the two commands really fast? Maybe he wouldn’t change…

Xan stopped playing and looked right up at me, as if he were reading my thoughts. He gave me a cheeky squint, and then I heard a ripple in the water.

“Augh, now that was just gross,” I said, the baby dragon ripping a nasty one.

“Gotta be something you ate, or someone,” I teased, fanning my face and pinching my nose. He got a kick out of my expression, Xan happily swimming in circles with his tongue hanging out the side of his mouth like a dog. Until I heard the door to the bathroom slam open.

“Silas! Did you break wind?!” Jezz cried, the nosy ice wolf walking into my private session. She pointed her nose in the air and took one short sniff. “Oh, never mind. That was Xan.”

“Hh-hey!” I yelped, trying to cover my indecency. “What are you doing?!”

“Oh, stop it!” Jezz said, fanning her hand at me as she plopped herself on the toilet seat.
