Chapter NINE

“I’m honestly surprised,” I told Adalia as I spun around in her chair. Adalia pressed against my shoulders before muttering, “Stay still!” once again. I hated doing my hair, and I knew Adalia hated doing my hair too. Especially because I could never stay still when she played with it.

“Surprised about what?” she asked, though it was hard to make out what she was saying with bobby pins clenched between her teeth.

I glanced at our reflection in the mirror. Her long hair was parted to the side as the rest fell in a natural curve, looking full and beautiful. My dark hair contrasted hers dramatically, with strands that fell straight. She was giving me the half-up, half-down look I always loved on her.

“I’m surprised that I’m actually looking forward to tonight. It’ll be nice to relax a little, you know?”

Her twinkling eyes met mine in the mirror before she laughed lightly and picked out a pin. “I know what you mean.” Then her smile turned mischievous. “You’re excited to see a certain someone, aren’t you?”

“Oh shut up.” I swatted her arm gently but couldn’t conceal my own grin. Liam and Adalia knew about the whole “pretending to break up” thing with Kyler. It was weird; we’d never actually been dating in the first place, but sometimes it had felt like we were. I didn’t really know what we were, but I knew that I was too deep now to deny I had feelings for him.

Adalia dabbed a little more makeup on my eyes and cheeks before giving me an approving thumbs-up. “You look great!”

She glanced at the clock. “And we’re going to be late. We better go.”

We both clambered up and grabbed our jackets from her bed. The two of us raced down the stairs in her house and burst out the front door before I took a hold of her arm and stopped.

“Hang on, you’re going to mess up your hair if you run that fast.”

“My hair is indestructible, thank you very much.” But she took a deep breath and started walking to the car at a slower pace. “Sorry, I’m just really excited. Plus, I don’t want to make Liam wait too long. I think he’s already there.”

“He can wait a couple minutes,” I said with a reassuring look as I opened the door and slid into the driver’s seat. “Besides, you know he’s the type of guy who can talk to anyone.”

“Yeah. Yeah, I do,” she said with a lingering grin. Then she closed her door, and I hit the gas.

The ride to Sterling’s house didn’t take too long, but my nerves started acting out once we pulled up and noticed the number of cars parked on the street. I was dreading being surrounded by people who smelled of sweat and alcohol. It was fun sometimes, but it’d been a while, and my stomach was starting to churn in anticipation.

As we stepped out of the car, we could hear the music pump-ing from his house, despite being almost a block away.
