"No way," Lee said. "You're wicked sometimes, but not like that."

"I've been wicked exactly like that, Lee. A lot of us are. Not you, but some people declare other people dead or ruin Nativity Plays, while others push people out of boats."

Lee made a strange face, like she had just tasted something bad. But before I could ask her about it, she said, "Okay, but why is she doing it to you? Just because you aren't there to defend yourself anymore?"

"Maybe, or because I obeyed my father's commandment and haven't phoned her. Also it seems she grabbed the boy she knew I was interested in. Not that I care about that, but she might have felt a twinge of guilt." I thought about Aimee's views on boys. "No more than a twinge, though," I added. "Or maybe she's doing it for some reason too twisted for me to think of right now."

"See, that's what I mean? She's twisted; you're not."

"Okay, Lee, I get the point. I'm wonderful."

"Let's not go overboard," she said.

"I already did, thanks to Brad," I joked, and we laughed.

"Do you like Nick, though, Tess? Really, I mean? It doesn't matter if you don't, except I think he likes you, and he isn't suave or anything so you might not even know it.

But if you don't like him, we should let him know somehow. I'd hate-"

It seemed merciful to interrupt her. "I like him, Lee. I don't know if I ‘really' like him, but I like him. At first I thought he was boring compared to Brad, but as we have learned since then, being not like Brad can only be a good thing sometimes. So I'm going to give Nick a good long look. So put your heart at ease on his account, and you'd better not even think of telling him a single word of this."
