“Brother,” he says. No secret language now.

“I’ve lost you,” the man says.

“No, no. Mattis. We merely travel on different planes these days.” The dead body laughs. I’m not sure whether to be grossed out or intrigued.

“But why, Connor?” Mattis asks, holding his brother’s hand. “You should’ve left it alone.”

“I wasn’t wrong. The girl was the one.”

“You saw her that night. She looked lost. She had no idea what she was witnessing, let alone what she was supposed to do. There’s no way she can be the source.”

A long silence. Mattis takes the vial and drips more into Connor’s mouth. He starts speaking again.

“She wasn’t ready. She didn’t know who she was. But she can do it. She can open the gate. She can help bring back Natalia. You’ll be the one to rejoin Natalia and Ellis. You understand the prestige that will follow.”

Who’s Natalia?

“She can’t,” Mattis says. “She won’t learn in time. These rituals take months to prepare. Our window between the two moons will close before she can learn even the beginning of her powers. If she is who you think she is—it’ll take too long to train her.”

“Not if you make her desperate. A student’s ability to manifest and manipulate the energies is only as strong as their drive to learn it. Take something from her. Dangle it over her head. She will fight.”

Mattis Wendell shakes his head. “I’m afraid I don’t hold your faith.”

“You may not, but you must. If not, my earthly death is in vain. Would you allow that?”

“Of course not!”

“Then you know what you must do.”

The morgue fades away, and I’m back in Zella’s cottage.

Owen’s awake and two pairs of eyes stare at me expectantly. I don’t know where to start.

“They took her because of me. They think I’m the source, that I have to help them, and that I’ll learn faster if I’m desperate. So they took her so that I’d fight for her.” My eyes well up with tears. They’re using her in order to use me. And it’s working. I’m doing exactly what they wanted. “What do I do now? I don’t think I am who they think I am.”

“You are,” Zella says.

Owen nods to agree. He yawns. “What’s going on?”

Do I tell him?

“I sedated you,” Zella says, no sense of remorse about it. “Don’t worry. It’s harmless. We just needed some girl talk.”

Owen pauses to process that, but shrugs his shoulders. Are all magic people this crazy? “What else did you see?”

I try to recall all the details. “She was run off the road and chased through the woods. They caught her in the parking lot of her apartment and then injected her with something to knock her out.”

“Who’s they?” Owen asks. He’s more awake now and much more tense.

“Wendell. Not Connor. He has a brother. Mattis. Mattis took her. Before that, though, he was in a morgue somewhere, talking to Connor. He’s dead, but he used something to reach him.”

“Wormwood and bay leaves, most likely. Mix it with a carrier oil for a decent necromancer serum.
