Miracles, however, should never be dismissed carelessly. The gospels make it clear that to reject the evidence of a miracle is a serious matter. Jesus gave the following sad warning over two towns in which he had done miracles: ‘What horrors await you, Korazin and Bethsaida! For if the miracles I did in you had been done in wicked Tyre and Sidon, their people would have sat in deep repentance long ago, clothed in sackcloth and throwing ashes on their heads to show their remorse.’48

Jesus’ miracles are best seen as signs. For those who are prepared to think about them, they point to many things: who Jesus is, the character of his kingdom, the nature of the future and God’s character. Above all, Jesus’ miracles challenged people to give their verdict on him.
