Stahl doubted very much that Ty Murrell would confide in him about anything Hollister had said the other day when he stopped into the station, but Stahl also figured he had nothing to lose by asking about it. Either way it would be interesting to hear how Murrell would respond. Stahl took the empty chair beside Murrell’s desk and waited until he was off the phone.

“Hey, Vince,” Murrell said after finishing his call. “What’s happening?”

“Same old. Just wondering what Dan Hollister was in about the other day. Anything interesting?”

“Not really. Catching up a bit is all. Why do you ask?”

“No reason, just curious. How’s he doing anyway? Still on the sauce?”

Murrell raised his eyebrows and shrugged. “Who knows? If anybody’s got good reasons to drink it’s him. I only hope he can get on with his life. He took out a P.I. license a while back. I think it’s good he’s giving himself something to do. It’ll keep his mind occupied.”

“Yeah, yeah, for sure.”

“Look, Vince, I know you weren’t happy about the way the investigation went down with the OPA but it was the right decision. Besides, the brass wanted it put to bed quickly and with as little fanfare as possible and that’s what happened. It might not have been the most thoroughly investigated shooting in the history of the department but we all know it was righteous.” He looked at Stahl for confirmation. He didn’t get it.

Stahl gave a little nonchalant shrug of his own. “If you say so, Ty. The OPA ran the investigation the way they saw fit. Me? I would have dug a little deeper. Just my way. But I guess there was some pressure put to bear, huh?”

“Sure, but it’s not like they overlooked anything. They did everything they needed to do.”

“Really? I don’t know, you could be right.”

Murrell looked mildly miffed. “Hey, it’s not like it was a big mystery. It was pretty obvious what had gone down. Anybody would have reached the same conclusion they did.”

“You knew Kinsey, right? From previous arrests.”

“Sure, pretty much everybody knew that slimy little prick.”

“Had he ever used a weapon in the commission of a crime before?”

“Not that I know of. What does it matter?”

“It goes to m.o., Ty.”

“Look, it’s been dealt with. It’s over. The brass are happy and a good cop was retired with honors. That’s all that really matters.”

“I suppose.”

“What is it with you anyway, Vince? Dan Hollister is a decent guy who got dealt a real shitty hand. Why can’t you just accept that justice was served and let it go?”

Stahl reacted with an impassive nod. “You’re probably right, Ty. I should let it go.”

He stood up and ambled back to his own workspace.

Those bells that always sounded whenever he was faced with deception?

They were ringing like crazy.
