Chapter Seven
in which a meeting does not go as planned
Lily was lying on a lounge chair – one she and Megan had surreptitiously borrowed from the swimming pool at Uncle Frank’s house – and sipping a glass of wine mixed with berry juice. It was delicious, especially once Cumnus had dunked the ceramic jug into the rushing waters of the mountain stream to cool it to the perfect temperature.
She heard the steady slap, slap of Megan’s running shoes on the path and turned to see her cousin sprinting into the clearing. It was a climb of at least 200 feet up from the grassy meadow – the original meadow with the magic doorway – and Megan liked to run full speed the whole way. She said it was a “killer butt workout” but Lily thought it just looked painful. If that was what it took to get a killer butt then Lily was pretty satisfied with her soft, squishy one.
Megan slowed to a brisk walk and paced up and down the bank of the little pond. She was breathing heavily and sweat poured from her tanned skin, giving a glimmer and sheen to every bump and groove of her well-defined muscles. Lily was generally disgusted by hot, sweaty people but somehow Megan made it look sexy.
“Ahh, that spray feels awesome,” Megan panted. The little pond was fed from a small waterfall that tumbled down from high in the mountains. Droplets of splashing water cooled the whole area. It was why Lily had talked Cumnus into carrying their lounge chairs up the steep path to this spot.
“You should sit down and enjoy it!” Lily patted the seat of the lounge chair next to her.
Megan sauntered over and sat down heavily on the pool chair. She slipped off her running shoes and then peeled off her white socks. “Actually,” she said, “I think I’m going for a swim.”
“Oh, Meg, that water is so cold!”
“Not over by the opposite bank. Come on!” Megan had already shed her sports bra and shorts and was wading into the pond. She loved being able to go for a run wearing next to nothing. Back in Boston, she had to practically put on a parka to avoid being hit on by every guy on the jogging path. To Lily that didn’t seem like such a bad thing, but Megan was less impressed by having guys hit on her.
When the water was up to her thighs, Megan dove under. Her impossibly firm and round backside thrust upward for a moment and then disappeared under the water. Lily sighed. Maybe running that trail was worth it after all.
“Come on in, the water’s fine,” Megan called when she resurfaced on the opposite side of the pond. She stood and droplets shed off of her long, graceful limbs like a shower of diamonds. Somehow, Megan made everything seem glamorous.
“Oh, all right,” Lily said with some frustration. She set down her drink and shrugged out of her bathrobe. “Oh, that’s freezing!” she screeched as she slowly waded into the water.
