John Greaves and al-Hakam

Greaves gives the story of Sūrīd much as the Akhbār al-zamān does, including some of the tales of al-Ma’mūn appended to it. As we have seen, al-Hakam did not know the Sūrīd story, which had yet to be written, and he lived too close in time to al-Ma’mūn to have known the legends that arose around him a century after his death, so Greaves either possessed a manuscript of al-Hakam’s history of Egypt that had been edited to add a later story, or he had a copy of a book like the Akhbār al-zamān wrongly attributed to al-Hakam. He speaks of al-Hakam twice. The first time, he provides what begins as a genuine quotation from al-Hakam about there being nothing known for certain about the pyramids, but it goes on to talk about Sūrīd with words that do not appear in any extant text of al-Hakam. Greaves’s version is closest to that of Ibrāhīm ibn Waṣīf Shāh in its details, but it is much condensed, and his direct source remains unknown to me.
