TWENTY-ONE

GRABBING A BITE AT THE QUICK-E

“Are you hungry? You hungry, girl? Brody stroked the head of the golden retriever as it stood panting with its front paws perched on the center console, staring forward with excitement, “Yeah, me too. We will stop right now,” he soothed as he pulled his green Astrosvan into the lot of the Quick-E and backed into a spot.

His two golden retrievers, Mitzy and Meiser, lunged into the front seats and quickly exited as Brody opened his door. They waited for him to open the entrance, dashed inside the store, and headed for the dog food display.

Brody grabbed a bag of dog food, then fixed himself a hamburger as Mitzy and Meiser vacuumed up loose pieces on the floor; various customers approached and petted them before heading to check out.

Brody lifted the bag to his shoulder, thanked the clerk, and took a bite of his burger, “Come on, guys,” he called and held the door open for Mitzy and Meiser as they hurried outside and jumped into the van.

Brody tossed the bag into the back, slid behind the wheel, and dropped the van into gear.

He heard a growl from behind him, “What? Are you jealous of my burger? Ok, I will give you a bite,” Brody said, tearing off a piece and holding it up as he began rolling forward.

Mitzy lurched forward, took the food and two of Brody’s fingers into her mouth, and clamped down hard.

Brody screamed and hit the brake as Mitzy continued biting him to the bone. Meiser then jumped into the front seat and quickly sank his teeth into Brody’s throat, then started thrashing his head back and forth as blood began spraying the inside of the van.

Brody fell silent and slumped in his seat as his neck continued to squirt onto the dogs and windows.

Meiser leaped through the driver's window, shattering it, followed by Mitzy, and the pair ran to the store's front entrance, using their bodies to push one of the doors open. Mitzy stood with her body, holding the door open as Meiser ran inside, tore open several bags, then began howling, catching the attention of everyone inside.

Dogs of various breeds and sizes began flowing into the store, consuming a few bites from the piles and then dropping to the floor with seizures. The dogs recovered, got to their feet, and positioned themselves close to shocked customers and the clerk behind the register.

“What the hell is this?” The clerk yelled.

Meiser barked loudly; then they attacked.

The bus Annabelle and Darryl shared rolled along Interstate 90 as the riders fell asleep in their seats, one by one and pair by pair. Some brought pillows, others used coats, and most of them smelled. Some stunk when they boarded, but most picked up that “bus” smell after hours of sweating and sitting with little or no quality air exchange.

The driver was an older gentleman in a bus uniform, wearing a navy blue blazer, tie—standard issue—and hat. He seemed to be a pleasant enough man once you got to know him, but he was on the stern side at the first meeting.
