The body changes as we age, and loss of muscle mass (including cardiac muscle) and coordination, a process known as sarcopenia, begins to accelerate in your 40s. What this gradual loss of muscle mass means is that weight loss may be more difficult as you age, unless you’re actively doing something to retain muscle; sarcopenia is by no means an inevitable process. Resistance training is the most powerful way to halt the physical effects of aging. And it’s never too late to start: researchers at the University of New Mexico found that beginning a strength training program in middle age reduced sarcopenia’s physical effects (sagging skin and muscles, loss of coordination) later on in life and even reversed it in elderly people. A separate USDA-funded study found that seniors who followed a resistance-training program for 12 weeks (three 45-minute sessions per week) increased muscle strength an average of 30 percent.
