Chapter Twenty-One

Bronson walked through the lobby of the courthouse towards Judge Mitchell’s courtroom. Officers Tosh and Lopez stepped out from a doorway not too far away from Bronson.

Tosh was the last person Bronson wanted to see after last night. Maybe it was a good thing seeing Tosh now. Maybe Bronson would grab Tosh’s gun and use it to blow Tosh’s head off. Perhaps that was too drastic. He could shoot him with his taser, over and over and over. It would take everything Bronson had to not choke Tosh today.

“There he is,” Tosh said to Bronson, “public defender number one.” Tosh and Lopez laughed.

“Clever,” Bronson said. “Did you just think of that, or do you prepare these witty comments in advance?”

Tosh and Lopez walked with Bronson down the hall, towards the courtroom. They were going to the same place. Tosh was testifying today. What a wonderful coincidence.

“Oh, come on,” Lopez said. “Where’s your sense of humor?”

Bronson stopped in front of the courtroom doors. He looked at Lopez. He wanted to slap him across the face just for being Tosh’s partner. Bronson had a lot of things on his mind at the moment - Willo, Carter, April, the trial, moving across the country. He wasn’t in the mood to laugh. Not today.

Bronson looked at Tosh. The absurdity of the situation hit him like a blanket party. He was face to face with the man who knowingly kissed his girlfriend less than twelve hours ago. And, most likely they did more than kiss.

“Are you ready to testify today, Officer Graham Tosh?”

“I am so excited, I can barely control myself.”

“I’m just curious,” Bronson said, “would you rather be in court or out patrolling the mean streets of Chicago?”

Tosh smirked. “Are you serious? It’s not even close. I’d rather be out on the streets. That’s where the action is.”

“But,” Bronson said, “your testimony here today will help put a bad guy away, right? So, that’s good, too.”

“Yeah, what’s your point?” Tosh said.

“I thought we were just having a conversation. Do I have to have a point? I know we don’t always see eye to eye, but I respect what police officers do. Being a cop is a tough job and I just want you to know that I really, truly respect those officers who put their lives on the line every day, and are also honest, ethical, trustworthy, and kind. You guys know a few police officers like that, don’t you?”

Tosh nodded. “Go ahead. Get it out of your system.”

“Well, you might not know this, but some cops have never been suspended. Many haven’t even been disciplined for violating people’s civil rights. Can you believe that, Tosh?”

“Not all cops are dealing with the people we deal with.”

“Right. Oh, I just remembered what I wanted to ask you. Did you play poker at my dad’s house last night?”

“No,” Tosh said.

“I was at my office late last night, so I didn’t know if you guys played poker or not. What did you do last night?” Bronson watched Tosh’s eyes closely.
