Jess paused for a moment at the side entrance of the Chesterfield’s bathhouse to enjoy the view of the full moon illuminating the valley. A soft, warm breeze ruffled his hair, and he was glad he had left his bowler at home. Surely this late no one would be around to be offended by his bare head.

With another appreciative glance at the view, he unlocked the door and entered the palm-ringed lobby, then relocked the door. Certain now of no one discovering him, he made his way to the ladies’ side, where Miss Sparrow had said he would find Corrie soaking her foot.

The sulfurous smell of the hot springs that provided the bathhouse with its famed mineral water increased as he advanced down the hallway. Many of his friends swore by the healing properties of the spring water, but Jess had never indulged in either soaking in it or drinking it.

“J-Jess?” Corrie’s unmistakable voice wavered, as if she was frightened. And well she might be, given the distance from the hotel and its nighttime solitude.

“It’s me, Corrie,” he called to reassure her and increased his speed, only to come to a jarring halt at the door of her room.

Steam filled the large open space over the ladies’ bath—a fifty-foot-wide marble bathing tub. But the huge pool wasn’t what deprived him of his breath.

It was Corrie.

One foot dangling in the hot water, she sat on the edge with her hair tumbled down in soft ringlets to her waist. The robe she wore had slipped down on one side to reveal her soft, flushed shoulder with its strange tan line. Vaguely, he wondered how her shoulder had been exposed to the sun. Then his attention was drawn to the moisture that glistened on her lips as she licked them with the end of her pink tongue.

His body reminded him emphatically that he’d had no woman in months. And he’d wanted no woman for months.

No one but Corrie.

Fearful of scaring her, he slowly walked to her side and knelt without touching her. Every nerve ached for the feel of her, every heartbeat pounded a message of need.

She raised her foot. “I walked a heck of blister on my toe, but this is helping.”

Water glistened on her calf, and the robe opened to reveal an expanse of thigh, again with an unusually placed tan, darker below and creamy pale above.

“Sparrow drained the sucker and then helped me make it here after the baths closed.” Corrie lowered her foot into the steaming water again. “She said she’d send a message for you to get me home.”

Through a throat tightened by desire, he answered, “Yes. She said she has to work tonight. Something about the royal Karakovs arriving.”

She sank her other foot into the water, and seemingly unaware that her robe had parted far up her thighs, offering a mesmerizing glimpse of dark curls. Aching to grab her and tumble her right there, he forced his gaze to her face.

That was a mistake, for more dark
