Prom falls on May 1st, which would’ve been Whit’s nineteenth birthday. He was older than most of his class because, of course, my parents held him back for sports. I know he would’ve liked the pomp and circumstance of being the birthday boy at prom, and I wonder if he was here if he would have gotten up the courage to ask OCMC to come to town.

Why didn’t you want us all to know this girl, Whit?

Last year he took Josie Greene, captain of the cheerleaders. They looked perfect together posing for pictures around the Greenes’ oasis-like swimming pool. Was Whit actually thinking about OCMC as he smiled for those pictures? Was that why he was home from prom before midnight? I always presumed he came home early because he cared so much about his morning workouts. Maybe he didn’t care as much about football as we all thought.

Gran comes to town the week before prom and takes me to pick out a dress. We go to Glitz Bridal and she splurges on a flowy light pink chiffon gown. She likes it because the fabric “looks expensive,” and I like it because it's an unobtrusive color and it has hidden little pockets for my phone. After New Year’s Eve, I’ll never attend another formal event in my life without dress pockets. It’s a total game changer.

Mom braids my hair into two tight French braids and twists them together to form the illusion of a braided crown around my head. I love it and I love seeing Mom care about things she used to obsess over. Silly things like fixing my hair. Dad follows me around with his camera, snapping pictures of my hair and makeup. The whole scene feels so typical and normal, it nearly makes me cry happy tears.

After enough pictures have been taken to satisfy Mom and Riley’s mom, Henry, Riley, Will, and I pile into Will’s vintage red Mustang. The last time I hung out with Will we were ten years old and obsessed with Pokémon cards. I can tell he has grown into the perfect match for Riley. He is like a human golden retriever, and Riley is loving the nonstop attention and affection. We go to the Mercantile on Broadway for dinner, and then we head to the downtown walking bridge to take more photo snapping.

Is it even prom if your social media isn’t overflowing with staged shots?

Henry and I mostly do silly pictures, like the awkward prom pose with his arms around me from behind, 1980s style. Riley and Will, on the other hand, suck face in every shot, and Henry and I can’t look each other in the eye while they make-out for the camera.

Every moment their lips are locked, it feels like the pressure increases for what will happen between Henry and me at the end of the night.

When you go to a school like Warner Prep Academy, there’s no reason to rent a hotel ballroom for your prom. Our cafeteria can best be described as Hogwarts, but with anchored candelabras instead of floating ones.
