Stroking her belly after finishing her candy meal on the bench, the shadowin dried herself with her towel. Tossing it aside, Nadia clasped her hands, bowed her head and said a short prayer. Once she was done, she made the sign of the cross with her hand, stood up and walked to where the little vampire stood. Kris turned around and scanned Nadia.

“How you feeling?” asked Kris.

“Stuffed, dry and smelly,” Nadia answered with a grin. “And also a fear of getting diabetes with all that sugar I ate.”

“You’ll be fine. By the way, what were you doing just now right after you ate?” questioned the child pontianak.

“I was praying to God for forgiveness, for eating the stolen food and also killing those monsters,” Nadia uttered with tenderness mixed with fear. “And … for the boy who died.” The thoughts of the boy’s death stabbed her in the heart. “You must be offended.”

“Offended about what?”

“Prayers … since you’re a vampire and all that, right?”

“It stings my ears a bit, but I’ll be fine. By that image of the big JC on your cross, I assume you are Catholic. The only thing that affects me with that religion is churches, which set me on fire if I go in. And holy water melts me.”

“Oh …well … I…”

But Nadia stopped talking when a squealing voice came from the sky and dived towards the two heroines.

“Elly.” Kris extended her arm, happy at the arrival of her feathery partner. But instead of her, the brown spotted owl met with Nadia and she cozied on her arm.

“Oh!” said a startled Nadia. “Hey there.” She lifted her arm to get a better look at Kris’s pet animal. Her fingers cuddled at the tiny owl’s stomach. Elly shook her tail feathers, relishing Nadia’s soft knuckles that were smoothing her tiny head. The bird giggled. Nadia gave a wide smile. “Oh, it’s so adorable.”

“Oh, yeah.” Kris nodded. “I haven’t properly introduced both of you bozos to each other.” Elly squealed at Kris angrily. “Yes! I’m calling you a bozo! Now, shut up and let me introduce the both of you!”

The shadowin looked at Kris. “You call this bird Elly, right?”

“Yep. Elly of the Warrior Birds, meet Nadia Jelita, the shadowin, and Nadia, meet Elly.” Kris swung her hand for their introduction.

“Warrior Birds?”

“That’s the title that she got from where she’s from. She’s a soldier from the Invisible Island.”

“Oooo!” the shadowin hooted. “The Invisible Island? Cool! Are you gonna fill me in on that?”

“Hell no!” the little hellion swore. “I’m not telling birdbrain’s story. It’ll take forever and she ain’t that important!” Her feathery companion gave a hard stare. “Don’t give me that look, Elly! I’m not in the mood!”

“Well, I think she’s a delightful little bird.” Nadia rubbed Elly’s stomach and giggled. “I can see why you keep her around, Kris, even though she annoys you sometimes.” Nadia brought her lips to the bird’s ear and whispered, “But I don’t see why you stick around with this little meanie.” Elly and Nadia chuckled.
