CHAPTER EIGHT

Leo carried the unconscious succubus over his shoulder for a couple of blocks, until we were far enough away from the crash site that we wouldn’t be stopped and asked any questions. When we reached the street corner Dante had asked us to meet at, we found him waiting for us with a car. He stepped out of the driver’s seat, went around the car, opened the backseat, and helped Vik and I get inside.
We had every reason to stuff the succubus into the trunk, but the last thing I wanted was for her to wake up and get away because we weren’t paying attention, so we put her in the back seat with us, while Leo rode shotgun. I had mentally prepared myself to endure the long drive back to the mansion with this woman thrown across my lap, but Dante had other plans.
It took only around ten minutes for Dante to get us from the corner where he had picked us up, to a small townhouse outside of which he had parked the car. Leo and Vik pulled the succubus out of the car, and then the three of us followed Dante into the house on this quiet, idyllic street. It felt old, maybe a century old, maybe older. The walls were made of stone, the floors of black hardwood, but it wasn’t cold inside, like I had been expecting.
“In here,” Dante said as he led us through a corridor in the dark house. He flicked a light on and showed Leo and Vik the way into the cellar. I followed them, each step warier than the last. Dante had clearly secured this place, but I wasn’t feeling right, wasn’t feeling entirely safe. I thought at any moment this strange, unknown woman would snap awake, and then murder us all.
In the cellar there were two rooms separated by a blue, wooden door. In the main room there was a wine rack with a couple of bottles sitting in it, shelves covered in various tools and objects I thought had no meaning or importance but were clearly being stored for a rainy day, and a small, gas powered generator. The walls were damp, the ceiling was low, and there seemed to be a lack of windows. This place wasn’t cozy at all. In fact, it was damn cold.
Dante opened the blue door revealing an even smaller room inside of which there was a mattress, pillows, a blanket, and a chair. He flicked a switch, and a single bulb buzzed to life overhead, throwing a meagre amount of light around.
“Sit her down,” Dante said, and Vik and Leo obliged, setting the woman up on the chair while Dante stepped out to grab a few lengths of rope. I watched them seat her, then tie her up, wondering if that would be enough to keep her where she was supposed to be, but knowing full well it wouldn’t be enough.
“What is this place?” I asked.
