Chapter Twenty-Seven
July 30, 2015
Kate Murphy
Roxbury Police Station, Boston
Kate was turning off her laptop when Rosebud rushed back into the lunchroom, out of breath.
âGreat, youâre still here,â he said.
âWhat?â Kate asked, a little annoyed. She looked at the clock on the wall: 11:30 p.m. It was late, and she was exhausted.
Better not be about more paperwork that needs to be filled out tonight. I need sleep.
âThe FBIâs psychiatrist wants a woman to interview the wacko, and they donât have one on staff. Follow me.â
âReally?â Kate exclaimed, her heart jumping in her chest.
A chance to do more detective work. Real detective work this time, not just filling out reports, and with the FBI? Iâll be interviewing a clone! This could even help me free Kenny. Well, maybe.
She stood up quickly, fueled by adrenaline, but the long day and lack of sleep from the previous night made her dizzy. âLet me grab a coffee first, though. I need one,â Kate said.
âOf course.â
A few minutes later, her computer packed, a small coffee and the completed reports in hand, she followed Rosebud to the interrogation room. As they passed Detective Fullerâs office, she slid the paperwork underneath his door.
âLetâs hope you wonât have to redo those,â he said, grinning wide.
Rosebud filled Kate in about Robertson, his note, Beethoven, and Dr. Dobbins before they reached the door to the observation room, so she was caught up to speed.
âLetâs drop your stuff here and meet the doc,â he said, letting her into the room before him. âThis is Officer Kate Murphy,â Rosebud said. âPatrol cop undergoing detective training.â He nodded toward the thin, gray-haired man wearing tortoiseshell glasses. âThis is Dr. Dobbins, with the FBI.â
Kate couldnât believe what was happening right now. Did Rosebud think she was undergoing detective training for real? Nah. Maybe it was just the simplest way to explain why she was involved with the case. Whatever. She was playing in the big leagues, about to interview a clone! Now, that was something.
âPleased to meet you, Officer Murphy. Thanks for joining us on such short notice. Iâll be going in with you. I think he may trust women more than men.â Dr. Dobbins paused, examining her. âWould you mind letting your hair down?â
âWhy?â Kate asked, taken by surprise by his request.
âYou look a little stern with the way itâs coiffed right now. Donât get me wrong. Perfectly suitable for work, but Iâd like him to bond with you, not be intimidated by you. Maybe we can let go of the professional police officer image and go with a more feminine, nurturing look? In fact, we donât even have to mention youâre a police officer unless he asks.â
Kate nodded in agreement, anxious to help in any way she could. âFine by me.â
She took out her bobby pins and the elastic band of her ponytail. She ruffled her hair to style it the best she could, considering itâd been up all day.
âSplendid,â Dr. Dobbins said before pointing toward the door. âLetâs go.â
Kate followed him into the interrogation room, butterflies in her stomach.
