Chapter Five

DESPITE THE million and one things that need doing, his mom declares the day a day of rest. She then ruins that by saying they’re all going to go ice-skating together. She calls it a bonding exercise and announces they’ll go out to eat afterward. She’s gotten a sudden craving for Thai.

He knows she’s just tired of cooking dinner for everyone.

His gaze flicks to Flynn, who looks distinctly awkward sitting beside Ginny. He’s not looking at any of them, his gaze focused on a random spot of wall. His mom follows his gaze.

“Flynn,” she says, “you’re coming too.”

He doesn’t look at her when he says, “You really don’t have to invite me.”

“I’m not,” she says. “I’m telling you you’re going.”

He nods, she nods, and then they’re all being sent to their rooms to get dressed and find their skates if they have them.

“Can you skate?” Andy asks Flynn as they head up the stairs side by side.

“I’m sure it’s not hard,” says Flynn. “You can do it, and your balance is awful.” He disappears into his room before Andy can say anything scathing in retort.

They have to take two cars to get to the rink, and Andy finds it awkward, but Flynn goes with Ginny, and he’s oddly… jealous? It just doesn’t feel right. He ends up sandwiched against the door, his sister sitting next to him. She’s staring a hole in the side of his face. He’s trying to ignore her, but then she says, “You wanted to ride with Flynn, didn’t you?”

“Course not,” he says. “I’m just worried about subjecting other people to him.”

Every last person in the car snorts. Andy glares at the headrest in front of him.

“Did you even last five minutes before you got over wanting to be far away from him?” his sister asks incredulously. “Like, have you even noticed that you’ve been sticking to him like glue since that first morning?”

Andy’s well aware of this, has ceased to even question it, if he ever even questioned it in the first place. He honestly can’t recall. The problem, he knows, is that he never really wanted to be away from Flynn in the first place. What he says is “Flynn’s been sticking to me, not the other way around.”

“I see,” says his sister. “And that makes all the difference.”

There’s a world of sarcasm in her voice, and Andy turns to scowl at her. Then he says, “Mom, will you tell Harley to shut up.”

“Harley,” his mom says, “stop trying to help your emotionally stunted brother.”

“Oh my God,” says Andy. “You guys don’t even like him. You tried not to feed him that first day!”

“We liked him just fine till he broke your heart,” says his dad, speaking up for the first time.

“He did not break my heart,” says Andy exasperatedly. “He pissed me off.” And it’s true. He took a little piece of Andy with him, ripped it right out, but he in no way broke Andy. Andy has managed just fine, could have continued to do so without him.
