Chapter 8: Johannesburg

Thinking back, the transition from Las Vegas to South Africa several years before had been more drastic than Liora had anticipated. She'd always craved adventure, and had been getting bored with her assignment to Brill Everly, a brilliant but dull young man who worked too much. Her Uncle Liam had offered her the new assignment as a distraction — a year at best, he said. Just enough time to break Brill's dependency on her, and for her to inject some excitement back into her life. The UNLV job had her contemplating her role in the world, and had her analyzing her actions, sometimes depleting her of any decision-making ability at all. Damned psychiatry.

The plane ride to Johannesburg was a long one. Watching movies and isolationism wasn't her thing, so she looked to her seat companions to strike up a conversation. Liam had booked the tickets, and surprisingly had spared no expense, as she was in first class. The person sitting next to her was an older gray-haired man, his South African accent indicating he was heading home. Liora was great at finding threads of connection, as she never forgot a name and remembered every detail about the people she met. This case was no exception. It turned out this man, Conner, had lived in Jerusalem fifteen years prior, and she seized on this. Her probing questions were crafty, innocent in their delivery, and her looks and persona always prompted a response, usually with some element of truth.

Conner revealed several clues to his connections; indeed, he seemed more than eager to impress her. She immediately understood why she was in first class. A smile crossed her face as the thought crossed her mind; Liam was always ten steps ahead of her. Conner was one of the connections she was supposed to make in South Africa. He was a prominent member of the Swan family, the leading conglomerate that controlled the diamond trade. She guessed he was high enough up to be useful, too, based on the name drops he was providing. The connection to Jerusalem was all she needed; her skill at conversation helped her achieve a personal level with him, as she knew an associate they'd both intersected with in the past. As soon as she made that connection, he let his guard down and began revealing personal info a normal person might have brushed aside. She filed away these nuggets for future use.

The sixteen-hour flight was one of almost continuous conversation between the two. Liora's cover was ideal; revealing she was a psychiatrist engendered a level of trust and allowed her the ability to infiltrate almost anywhere. Shortly before touchdown, she awoke and was readying herself for what lay ahead when Conner let a clue about his true nature slip. He was now hitting on her — a bold move, she thought, as he knew he was talking to a psychiatrist by then. This made him more vulnerable. As she pretended to give in to his veiled attempts at making a quick score, the information flowed more freely from his lips.
