Rodrigo came to get him and drove him back to the garage where they sat, passing a bottle of screw-top wine back and forth between them, talking about the past week. Timo left out the important details about Aurelia, only hinting that he had been helping watch over a VIP. Rodrigo respected the secrecy enough to not ask any direct questions about the who or the why, but went through the shootout in great detail over and over again. That’s where Javier found him.
“You’re Timo?” he asked. Timo looked up and handed Rodrigo the wine.
“Yes, sir.”
“Come with me.”
Timo followed him through the garage and down the hallway to the little office where he had made his first plea to be included. One of the steroid-juiced body guards put a metal folding chair in front of the table and returned to his corner as Javier sat. Timo waited until Javier indicated the chair before he sat.
“Tell me what happened,” Javier said.
“Woke up when I heard trouble downstairs at the house…”
“Why were you sleeping there?”
“Bernardo said I was okay to, if I wanted. I thought it was a big deal, so why only take one shift? Luis asked me to be on the alert for any issues…”
“Why did Luis expect issues?” Javier asked. Timo shrugged.
“Isn’t that his job?”
Javier eyed him for a minute, then waved his hand.
“So you woke up.”
“There was a man coming up the stairs, and I shot him. Got… the target out of the house and down to the dock and we got out of there.”
“Why by boat?”
“I didn’t know how many men there were, but they were in the house. I didn’t want to risk going back for a car, and on foot was too slow.”
The stupid, impulsive part of his brain wanted to add that he ruled out bicycles because the target was in a full-length skirt, but the filter on his mouth had grown long-accustomed to keeping these out of conversation. Even if it was true. Javier was nodding slowly.
“Someone told them where that house was,” he said. “The only people I’d rule out are the ones who are dead, and I’m not even sure about them. You saved her once, I’m going to put her life in your hands again. See Ricky out in the garage. He’ll give you as much money as you need. Go get her from this address, then call me at the number there once you’ve picked a place for her. I want you to stay with her from now until she leaves, and I want no one but myself to know where you are. You don’t call your mom, your girlfriend, your priest. Got it?”
Timo took the slip of paper from Javier and nodded.
“Comprendo,” he said, pausing.
“What?” Javier asked.
“Is that all?”
“Should there be more?”
Timo left. A hard-built Dominican gave him a lunch box full of money and Timo begged a ride off of Rodrigo to go get his car.
“What’s up, homes?” Rodrigo asked.
“Job isn’t done,” Timo said. “I’m gonna be gone a while longer.
