Chapter Nine

Jessie bit on her lower lip and looked from Sergio to the two drunks. By some miracle, Sergio and she made it outside the bar. Tom and his buddy tailed them, laughing and making jokes. Once on the sidewalk, Sergio planted himself in front of her. Then he reacted like an animal.

In seconds, Sergio shoved Tom violently against the building’s brick wall. Sergio’s fists blurred. Tom let out a croak. Blood dribbled down his lips as he slumped against the wall.

Tom’s friend stared at him and Jessie, but the whites in his eyes told her he was terrified. He should be. Sergio raised his bloody left knuckle to his mouth and licked it. The smell of piss filled the air. A stain appeared over the other drunk’s pants. Jessie wrinkled her nose.

“You and your friend better get lost before my boyfriend starts on you,” Jessie said. The drunk wisely grabbed Tom by the armpits and started dragging him away. Once they disappeared from her line of sight, she turned to Sergio. He breathed hard.

She tugged at his hand. “Let’s go home?”

He said nothing as he let her pull him back to the car. Sergio reminded her of a robot as he started the engine and drove for the trailer park. She stared at the dried blood on his knuckles. Not his. She would never forget the way he moved. He’d struck at that drunk like a snake without warning. A reminder that her Sergio was easily capable of violence.

He’s not yours, she chided to herself. Once they arrived at their destination, Jessie got out of the car first. It was cold, and she’d left her jacket at the bar. Going back for it didn’t seem wise, especially when Sergio was in this mood.

Before she could reach the front door, Sergio grabbed her shoulder and spun her.

“I can smell your fear, Jessie,” he said, pushing her against the front door. He bent one hand over her head. Her heart thudded. She shivered from a strange mixture of fear and anticipation. How many sleepless nights had she imagined him cornering her like this again?

“You scared me when you attacked that man, but only for a moment.” She met his intense gaze. “If you weren’t there to protect me, who knows what would’ve happened.”

“I’m no one’s white knight.”

“No, you aren’t, but you’re mine nonetheless.” Jessie pried her hand from his grip.

She circled her arms behind his neck, rose on tiptoe, and daringly kissed him. He tasted like cigarette smoke, beer, leather, and the clean soap he used. Sergio thrust his tongue down her throat.

Jessie couldn’t think. She clawed at his shirt and jacket. After he released her mouth, he planted more hot kisses down her neck. Sergio sucked the hollow of her collarbones and pressed a kiss to her breasts. He slipped the top half of her dress down, unveiling her bra.

He unclasped the hook with ease, then lowered his mouth to her left nipple. He sucked hard, making her gasp. Sergio marked her tits, leaving his teeth marks on both.
