Chapter 22

Samuel Bishop sat at a desk in a room of the Ritz Carlton and gazed thoughtfully down on Central Park. A view he loved so much and a reason why he always stayed at the Ritz when he visited New York. He turned his head slowly as his neck ached. “You’re getting old,” he mused. He’d only spent about three hours in front of the monitor. Back in his early years at the CIA, when he was an instructor, he received the nickname Pit-bull because he was always incessant about any research. Even then, Samuel’s abstract and extraordinary mind was noticed by his superiors and it became clear that he would make a perfect field agent. That was thirty years ago and the last five years he had worked as a freelancer. Many in the news media left him alone and the CIA and NSA still fully supported him and that was not because he knew of the many skeletons they kept hidden in the closet. No, it was because he was still considered one of the best, despite being almost fifty. He was absolutely unimpressive and just under five foot six inches with a bald head, but he possessed exceptional skills. Nowadays, the CIA, Mossad and private conglomerates like to assign him special tasks every now and then. Samuel only accepted them when they could be represented morally. When it concerned felons and terrorists he did not bat an eye. His personal network spanned half the globe and his connections reached the highest levels of politics and economics. Many people owed him quite a few favors that he could collect on. He took this job only out of friendship to attorney Edward Blake and the fact that he was downright smitten with Blake’s daughter Sybill. She had stood by him during some earlier delicate jobs and succumbed from time to time those particular “surges of adrenaline”. He was looking forward to their next performance together. Nevertheless, he wouldn’t use her on this job.
