Morton Baum was narcissistic, grand – a one-man impresario of City Center, and he ran it out of his law office. His was a very old-fashioned little office. Dark. He said, "I have a week free in March [1966J." And I said no, that I didn't want a week from him, I wanted a different arrangement. I wanted a partnership. That he would get twenty percent of the box office – this was really very crazy – we didn't have any box office. I said, "You'll get twenty percent, and if we do well, you'll give me three weeks in the fall."

And so he said, "Okay." I don't think he thought we could do it. But he had a week that he had to fill, and because he didn't like this Harkness thing – Morton Baum was another of these like Papp and Ted Shawn – he was going to do his bit, which was to give us the theater free. He was going to make a grand gesture. And I was going to make him a partner. That was my concession to him. This was our chance – possibly four weeks at City Center in 1966."15
