Attention and personal satisfaction

Attention and personal satisfaction also appear to have equally cultural importance to the actresses concerned. As we have seen above, among the 254 actresses who responded to the question of ‘the happiest thing about being an actress’, about 37 per cent of them stated that the very shooting process was the most joyous and rewarding experience of being an AV actress, which seems to contradict the claims of some feminist scholars (Dines 2008; MacKinnon 1983) that pornography functions to exploit and subordinate women. As mentioned in Chapter 4, the shooting process of most Japanese AVs lasts only one to two days. But still, as actresses, these women found the shooting the most joyful and emotionally rewarding experience of being an actress. This can be seen in the fact that half of these 37 per cent reported that they revelled in the ‘enjoyable, friendly and humorous atmosphere’ of the shooting process. Some even thought that they felt respected and loved in the shooting process. More importantly, about 35 per cent of them suggested that the happiest thing about being an actress was to chat onsite with different staff and crew members who were extremely kind and funny. Equally, another 11.1 per cent reported that they were delighted to meet many new friends and people on site.

If their most joyous experience of being an actress all revolved around the pleasant and friendly atmosphere of the shooting site, the rewarding and enjoyable experience of the shooting process, the kindness and friendliness of crew members, and the staff and people on site, it is not incorrect to say that what these actresses enjoyed was the immense attention and personal satisfaction they received during the shooting process. That is to say, they felt that they were the centre of attention from the minute the film crew and staff laid eyes on them. It is especially true if we take into account the fact that 11.5 per cent reported that they took great pleasure in being photographed, filmed, made-up and beautified by staff or crew members on site. We can see that what they revelled in is the fact that they were the very centre of the attention and well taken care of by the surrounding people.
