Aftermath

Several days passed since the blowout with Jesse. Hannah cried herself to sleep every night. She regretted some of her words, but in the end, this was what was best for her and the baby. He called several times but she didn’t answer. There were messages on her caller ID that she didn’t have the heart to listen to yet. Other than the episodes, things between them had been good. They had felt right. Now, there was just melancholy. Picking up the phone, she called Taylor.

“What’s up?” Taylor said cheerfully on the other end. Hannah could hear Kelly singing along with a Disney movie she was watching in the background and smiled for the first time in days.

“I need to buy some maternity clothes. I’m exploding from everything I own,” Hannah told her, not ready to address her problems with Jesse just yet.

“Awh . . .,” Taylor cooed.

“I thought that maybe you and Kelly might like to come with me,” she said.

“Kelly has a date with her father to a “Daddy and Me” play date with some other fathers in town, but I can go. Mom and Brianna would probably like to go too. You want to give them a call?” Hannah asked.

“I don’t know if I can handle Mom this morning,” Hannah began.

“Why? Is something wrong?” Taylor asked.

“Jesse and I split up again,” she said quietly.

“Oh, honey. I’m so sorry! Get dressed. I will be there in an hour to pick you up,” Taylor said. Hannah was good with that.

“I’ll see you in a bit,” she told her, hanging up the phone.

It was no huge surprise when Taylor arrived with their Mom and Brianna in tow. It was Taylor’s way to take things into her own hands and bring them all together. She gave Hannah a sheepish knowing look when she came in and smiled before pulling her into a huge hug.

“So, I’m guessing you all know?” Hannah asked, looking toward her mother and older sister.

“Yes. Taylor told us on the way over,” her mother said with a disapproving look. It was exactly the look Hannah had wanted to avoid, but it would have happened sooner or later. At least the initial blow had been struck by Taylor without her having to deal with it. No doubt that conversation had been one it was best she missed.

“Well, I don’t want to hear anything about it. It is what it is and I’ve got other things on my plate. See these pants? I have the button on them rigged to hold all this in,” she told them, pulling up her shirt to display her ingenuity with a hair band wound through the loop and around the button to create more room for her expanding tummy.

“Let’s get this wagon on the road then,” Brianna chimed in, shooting their mother a look as a silent indication to let it go for now. It was against their mother’s nature, but she took the hint and smiled warmly at her daughter before holding a hand out indicating that they should head out the door.
