CHAPTER TEN

The location was a park bench located far from their mutual places of work. They were nowhere near where anyone would expect to find them. Which was perfect, because neither one wanted to be surprised by a coworker and have to explain the other’s presence.

Williams arrived first.

He hadn’t touched base with Pauling since he’d asked her to look into the murder on the college campus, but he had a feeling, after this meeting, he was going to place an immediate phone call to her.

The other party arrived like he always did: with a high degree of stealth.

At one point, Williams was alone on the bench, the next, someone was sitting next to him. In this case, it was a tall, regally handsome man with a touch of gray at his temples, dressed in an expensive suit and the faintest whiff of cologne. His skin was the color of Cuban coffee, his teeth a dazzling white.

He was many things, but attorney was his main profession. His clients were few, but they were powerful and rich.

“Things have escalated,” the man said. He had a faint accent, despite the years of practice trying to lose it, Williams assumed. Some things never changed, no matter how much money, designer clothing and Patek Philippe watches you threw at them.

“Yes.”

Williams took the route with these people that the less said the better.

“They need to be brought back under control,” the man said. “The woman you sent there, the former FBI agent, what exactly is she doing? Reassure me and then I will reassure our mutual client. You already know how important that is to both of us.”

Williams did indeed know. That was a threat. One of the nicest, most subtle threats he’d ever received, but he knew exactly what it was.

“I haven’t spoken with her since the latest incident,” he said. “I knew we would be touching base so I thought I would wait in case you wanted to have any input in the conversation.”

It really wasn’t true. He hadn’t bothered to talk to Pauling because he knew she didn’t have anything yet. And he wanted to gauge the level of anxiety in the man with whom he was currently sharing the park bench.

“I see. Perhaps you ought to speak with her and remind her of the job she was tasked to do,” the man said. “Patience isn’t one of my client’s best attributes.”

“Yes, of course.”

“Let’s put a time limit on this next course of action.”

“Okay.”

“How about we give her no more than forty-eight hours to prove to us she is capable of completing the assignment. If not, we will have to talk to our client who I’m sure will want to take things to the next level.”

“And that level would be?” Williams asked.

“Extreme,” the man said.

“I see.”

The man got to his feet. “Wait at least fifteen minutes before you leave,” he said. “Contact me hopefully before the end of our deadline to tell me the job is complete. Otherwise, reach me the usual way and let the consequences begin.
