Chapter 7

“What are you doing?” Janine asked as Micah walked up the stairs right along with her.

“I’m coming upstairs to eat dinner with my family,” he told her and put his hands on her bottom to nudge her up the stairs. He chuckled when she jumped and almost tripped up the next two steps but he caught her before she could hurt herself.

“But…”

Micah shook his head. “You don’t honestly believe that I’m going to go back to my place without my girls, do you, cara?” he asked softly, moving up another step. This put his face at the same level as hers and Janine’s heart felt like it was going to burst out of her chest. “Micah, we can’t…”

“Have dinner?” he finished her sentence when she left the words hanging. “Of course we can. And I’ll even make you dessert.”

That startled her and she looked at him with amusement. “You can cook?” she asked.

He moved up another step, crowding her and not letting her make any space between them. “I can cook,” he told her. “Not as well as you can. But then, you’re a genius when it comes to food whereas I…”

“Use the microwave?” she filled in for him.

He laughed again. “It is convenient for reheating, si.”

She couldn’t help it. The idea of Micah in the kitchen trying to cook was just too funny. She’d tried to show him how to cook five years ago and…

“You’re remembering too, aren’t you?” he asked, his voice huskier than a moment ago. His eyes were darker and, she might be imagining this, but it was suddenly hotter on the stairway.

“No,” she told him firmly. Or as firmly as her overheated body could manage. Which was a bit marshmallowy.

His hand moved from the bannister to her arm, sliding up the skin, smiling when goose bumps appeared. “You remember everything.”

He was right. She remembered trying to teach him how to cook, how to make just simple recipes. But Micah was such a sexual being that those cooking lessons had ended with both of them kissing, touching and the food didn’t get prepared until much later. And she’d done the cooking because his ravenous body, ravenous for sex and not food, had nearly starved her some nights. She remembered being so wrapped up in making love with this man that it was midnight or even later, or earlier depending on one’s perspective, before she would sneak out of bed and make them a snack.

“Momma! Dana says we don’t have to go to bed tonight since we have a new daddy. Is that true? Do we get to stay up all night and play games with him?” she asked, practically jumping up and down with her excitement.

Janine jerked backwards, shaking her head to finish dissipating the spell that Micah had been weaving around her. “Bed,” she whispered, trying to figure out what they were talking about. “Um…no. You still have to go to bed, sweety.”

Dalia’s face fell and she walked back into the apartment. She heard
