“IT’S NEVER SOME LITTLE SKINNY guy who you end up having to carry,” Christopher complained. “No, no, it has to be some behemoth.”

“Behemoth?” Aisha asked.

“Yeah, behemoth. It’s a good word. It means great big dumb white boy who drinks too damned much.”

Jake McRoyan was far too drunk to walk unaided. He had consumed a large volume of beer and a smaller, but still dangerous volume of tequila. Aisha had found him collapsed in a corner in one of the bedrooms at the party. He’d been moaning something about Claire being a bitch, which wasn’t especially surprising. Jake and Claire had a strange, self-destructive relationship, it seemed to Aisha. Not at all like the mature, rational relationship she herself had with Christopher.

She’d gone to Claire to ask for help in getting Jake to move, but Claire had been coldly indifferent. That was a surprise. Claire had stood by Jake in the past when his drinking had gotten out of control. Maybe she’d reached the end of her patience. Claire wasn’t renowned for her patience.

So Aisha had drafted Christopher, and now the two of them were half-leading, half-carrying Jake down to the pier to catch the water taxi home. Jake’s knees kept splaying out, collapsing his legs. Then Christopher would grab him under his arms and prop him back up and Aisha would offer encouraging words: “It’s only another few feet, Jake, come on.”

Jake tripped over his own feet and nearly went flying. Christopher kept him from slamming against a concrete light post, but just barely. “Jeez, this guy is heavy,” Christopher complained. “I’ll bet he’s two twenty-five. Damn big lumpy football player. If a guy’s going to be a drunk and make people carry his ass around the streets, he ought to be under two hundred pounds.”

At last they reached the pier and sloughed Jake onto a bench, where he promptly rolled off and lay crumpled on the ground, passed out.

“Well, he stays there, as far as I’m concerned,” Christopher said. “I can’t lift that dude. When it’s time, we can drag him on board.”

“No argument here,” Aisha said. She had little enough pity for drunks, and because she’d had to carry Jake, she was sweaty and her clothes were rumpled and the image of a romantic interlude with Christopher on the trip back to the island seemed pretty unlikely now. “You know, I was kind of disappointed by the party tonight. I mean, I was at Richie’s last two birthday parties and both times we had some kind of massive explosion or something. Breakups, fights, hair pulling. It was kind of tame this year.”

“Maybe we just missed most of the excitement,” Christopher said.

Aisha decided she didn’t care if she was sweaty and frowzy. Christopher was too, so they were even. She wrapped her arms around his waist and kissed him. “We didn’t miss all the excitement. I remember certain exciting moments.”

Christopher kissed her deeply and slipped his hands inside her coat.

“Christopher, not out here in public,” she chided, although without much conviction.
