TWO

LUCAS WAS SITTING ON THE bed in the condo, staring at the phone, when Nina Geiger went in tentatively, feeling awkward and out of place in the guys’ room.

The sun had long since sunk behind the mountains, plunging the pristine little village into twinkling night. Downstairs the others—Aisha and Christopher, Claire and Jake, and Benjamin—were getting ready to go out to eat. Nina and Benjamin had considered staying in, a sort of protest over Zoey’s absence, but in the end that had seemed silly. Zoey was a big girl. By now she was back home on the island, probably pouting and crying a little and raging at Lucas for being an insensitive lout.

The insensitive lout was looking haunted and depressed. “Still no one there. I got the answering machine,” Lucas said without being asked. “I tried her this morning, no answer. I tried her at lunch, no answer.”

“Did you leave a message?” Nina asked.

“Yeah,” Lucas said snidely. “I said ‘Sorry I tried to pressure you into sleeping with me; can we still be friends?’ I’m sure she wouldn’t mind her mom or dad getting that message by accident.”

“That was sarcasm, right?” Nina asked. She spotted a plaid shirt hanging in the closet. “Is this yours? Can I borrow it for tonight?”

Lucas hung his head. “Sorry. I shouldn’t take it out on you. Actually, this last time I did leave a message. I told her . . . you know.”

“The L word?”

“Yeah. I’ll sound totally pathetic if her mom hears it. Or her dad, oh man.”

Nina busied herself with trying on the shirt in front of the mirrored closet door. Not bad. Looked kind of tough with the rest of her outfit and the eternally unlit Lucky Strike hanging from the corner of her mouth. “She’ll get the message before her folks,” Nina said reassuringly. Maybe, she added silently.

She was at a loss as to why she had come up here after Lucas. Her thinking had been that she would have talked to Zoey if Lucas had gotten through, but now that seemed like a fairly idiotic idea. What would she have been able to say to Zoey? Nina wasn’t the reigning world’s expert on relationships. What she really wanted was to get the complete story, the detailed word-by-word version that Zoey, as her best friend, was obligated to give her. But that would probably have to wait until Nina got home to the island.

“I guess Benjamin’s pissed at me, huh?” Lucas asked.

The question surprised Nina. Lucas had asked it because she was Benjamin’s girlfriend and therefore, presumably, an expert on his feelings. It gave Nina a little rush of pleasure that she was accepted in that role. “He just thinks the whole thing is kind of ludicrous. He doesn’t think you’re scum or anything. He just thinks you’re . . .” The phrase Benjamin had actually used was “all hormones and no brain.” But that would sound a little harsh. “He just thinks you’re kind of impatient.”

“Yeah, well, he’s not wrong.
