JONAH

This time, it wasn’t that memories were teasing me by pulling away before I could grasp them. My head throbbed because so many memories came flooding back at once, like my full name: Andrew Jonah Kettering. I’d gone by Jonah as a kid because my father’s name was also Andrew. My parents died in a car wreck just before I started an MFA program at a school in Tampa. My mother was a marine biologist, and that’s where my knowledge of dolphins came from. When I left for school, I started going by Andy to honor my father. I was a mess, needy and vulnerable. My advisor took advantage of that, seducing me easily and making me think he loved me. I bought all his lies, but it turned out I wasn’t the only student he was giving more than educational advice to.

I understood we had to keep things secret since both of our positions would be in jeopardy if anyone knew what we were up to, but before I realized he was a lying, selfish bastard, I’d been looking forward to finishing my degree so we’d be able to see each other openly, to get married, to start a family. I imagined a life where he would go to the university while I would work from home, creating art on commission while taking care of the children we would have.

I’d thought he was serious about me, that he wanted what I wanted, but when I’d casually mentioned something about the future, he laughed at me. I was nothing but a convenience to him. He had no intention of continuing our relationship once I finished my degree, and he’d never even considered marrying me.

Why would I when I have so many pliant omegas right here doing my bidding?

I told him I wouldn’t work with him anymore, and he said I didn’t have a choice. I had to finish the artwork I’d started for an exhibition or I would have to repay the fellowship I’d received. I threatened to tell the department head what he’d been up to, but he laughed at me, saying he had tenure and nothing could touch him.

I didn’t leave immediately, but when the semester finished in early May, I refused to register for summer term. I needed to get away. My parents had left me a decent amount of money, and I still had a lot in savings. I’d wanted to visit the rescue center on Golden Island for years, ever since I’d read something about it in an article my mom sent me. It hadn’t made sense at the time why I was so drawn to this particular place, but it was because Desmond was waiting for me.

I’d put my meager belongings into storage and planned to spend the summer traveling. I didn’t want Anthony to be able to contact me, so I didn’t give anyone details about my plans.

No wonder no one seemed to be looking for me. No one knew where I was.
