Chapter Twelve

Friday morning came around quite quickly. The previous two days had been spent examining evidence including the videos on which Micky had completed the first pass. They were also preparing for the pre-trial hearing which was to be on the following week. Whilst it normally took weeks or even months for these types of cases to come to trial at all, some strings appeared to have been pulled in the justice system perhaps due to the sensitive and contentious nature of the case. It had somehow been shoehorned into the court timetable. Another massive trial had also been recently delayed by some months due to the accused requiring heart surgery and had opened up a slot. The prosecution service evidently felt confident they had already got everything they needed for a successful outcome in Oonagh’s case.

For Bernadette, it was perfectly fine to tackle things sooner rather than later. Also, she felt, pragmatically, for Oonagh’s sake, her ultimate fate would be decided perhaps before she had become too used to being at large and living at home.

Bernadette and Eve had had breakfast as usual, and then soon after, Bernadette was standing at the door, for her goodbye kiss. This had become their routine, and Bernadette was comfortable with it. She looked forward to it and the knowledge that when she returned home, Eve would be there.

“Will I see you later then?” said Bernadette, as she always did, holding Eve’s hands in hers.

“Oh… well actually I have something to do, tonight, so I won’t be here, sorry I should have told you,” said Eve tossing this revelation off lightly.

“Oh…” Bernadette’s face fell on hearing this as much as she tried to stop the reaction.

“Don’t look like that,” said Eve contrite, “It’s only for a night, I’ll be back tomorrow night, I promise.”

Eve was not volunteering any further information and Bernadette did not like to ask. Inside her, though, inexplicably, there was a sinking feeling, a hollow in her chest. She told herself it was stupid but controlling your emotional baggage is often easier said than done.

“Well, sure… but…. there’s nothing wrong, is there?” she asked Eve kicking herself for saying it.

“Nothing, my darling, don’t fret, just something I need to do, that’s all.”

Eve was holding Bernadette in her arms, pulling her tight, reassuring her in that hug.

“Well, OK then, I had better go, have a nice time, whatever you’re doing,” said Bernadette, hoping and just wishing she would say. But Eve did not.

“I’ll miss you, I promise, try not to miss me too much,” Eve laughed and smiled at her in her usual way.

She kissed Bernadette and the kiss was as sweet as it ever was. Bernadette did not want to let her go. But she did in the end, knowing she had to leave.

“See you tomorrow then?” said Eve as Bernadette opened the door.

“Sure, yes, text me.”

“I will,” said Eve blowing her a kiss.

Bernadette shut the door, got in her car and drove away, but she was distracted. The radio turned into an appalling babble in her ears and she turned it off.
