Patrick Kelly was a good-looking man. He had black hair, green eyes, he was tall and clean-shaven. He wore a blue linen jacket, clean white shirt, jeans and suede boots. Bernadette always thought he would not look out of place on the cover of a fashion magazine. In reality, he was down to earth and an excellent listener.

“Hi, Bernadette, nice to see you again,” he said with a smile as he was shown into the meeting room by Alison.

“Patrick, lovely to see you.” She stood up and gave him a hug. Imogen looked surprised at this informality.

“This is Imogen, Patrick, my protegee,” she said with an easy laugh.

“Pleased to meet you,” said Imogen shaking his hand.

“Patrick and I are friends from way back,” said Bernadette, “I should have mentioned it.”

She motioned for them all to sit down.

“We met at university, I was studying psychology and Bernadette was studying law. We spent a lot of time together,” said Patrick by way of explanation to Imogen.

“Too much time, drinking, hanging out,” Bernadette regarded at him affectionately.

“Did you two?” asked Imogen looking from one to the other.

“Go out? Sleep together?” Bernadette laughed, “Oh, no, no, no, no.”

“She’s been gay as long as I can remember,” said Patrick, “Not that I wouldn’t have asked her out otherwise.”

“All my life,” Bernadette laughed.

“Well,” Patrick looked a little serious, “shall we get down to business?”

“Sure,” Bernadette replied, “So you’ll do the interview in here and if Oonagh is OK with it, then we’ll stay, and sit over there. We’ve got a video recorder set up. Ask her whatever you need to.”

“Sure, I understand, and then you’ll want a report, what are you looking for in it?”

“I can’t guide you obviously but Oonagh is going plead not guilty on the grounds of diminished responsibility, so take from that what you will.”

“You’re interested in her state of mind, particularly at the time of the murder,” Patrick said in matter of fact tones.

“I told you he was good.” Bernadette smiled at Imogen.

“I’m sure he is.” Imogen gave him one of her sauciest smiles.

“I never blow my own trumpet,” Patrick laughed.

“I guess you let other people do it for you,” Imogen responded smoothly.

“Right, Imogen,” Bernadette put in, giving her a quelling glance, “Shall we go and see of Oonagh is here? Patrick, we will leave to you set up.”

“Sure, thank you.” Patrick inclined his head graciously.

“Put him down, Imogen, honestly, what are you like?” Bernadette remonstrated as they shut the door behind them.

“You never told me he looked like that!” said Imogen unrepentant.

“Every female on campus has thrown their caps at him, and probably their knickers too if he let them, he’s handsome but a player of the worst kind,” Bernadette said severely.

“Well, perhaps he hasn’t found the right girl to tame him.”

“Oh God! Just leave him alone… at least until we’ve got his report.”

“I guess I can wait,” Imogen said innocently.

“Don’t say I didn’t warn you about him.”

“Consider me warned,” laughed Imogen.

They arrived at the bottom of the stairs. Oonagh was sitting in the kitchen at one of the tables.
