THIRTY-THREE

THURSDAY

Lexi’s phone buzzed, its loud ringtone amplified by the rattle of its vibration on the wooden coffee table. She pulled her arm out from behind Ed’s sleeping form, but her hand was completely numb and shooting pains tore from her elbow to her shoulder.

‘Ouch!’

She picked up her mobile with her other hand. The screen told her it was Tom. It also told her it was nearly ten a.m.

Oh, shit!

‘Yes,’ she said softly.

‘Lexi, is that you? I can’t hear you.’

‘It’s me,’ she hissed. She didn’t want to wake Ed.

‘You’re not in the office.’

‘No, clearly not. I’ll be in shortly.’ She didn’t have to tell Tom why she was late. But then he wasn’t the problem. It was her own conscience that was going to crucify her.

‘Head for Sherperdswell instead.’

‘Why?’

‘Meet me at the track at Shepherd’s Hill.’

‘What are you not telling me?’ A sense of foreboding made her feel suddenly cold.

‘Johnny Lycett-Boyd. He’s dead.’

She let out an audible gasp and, beside her, Ed started to stir.

‘What the hell?’

‘He was up at the racetrack – came off on a sharp corner, apparently. Rolled his car. I’m on my way there now.’

‘He’s definitely dead?’ She couldn’t believe it.

‘Yes. No doubt about it.’

‘When did it happen?’

‘Just now. Twenty minutes ago, maybe.’

Lexi stood up, and then winced at the sharp jab of pain in her leg.

‘I’m on my way.’ She rubbed the back of her leg. She needed a shower and a change of clothing, but there wasn’t time for that. She raked through her tangled hair with her fingers and avoided catching sight of herself in the mirror over the fireplace.

Ed was watching her from the sofa, fully awake now.

‘I’m so sorry, Ed. I have to go.’

‘I understand.’ Of course he did.

‘Have you got someone you can call? You’re welcome to stay here if you can’t face going home on your own.’

Ed stood up. ‘No, I can’t impose on you.’ He shook his head. ‘I’m sorry about last night. I screwed up that date for you, didn’t I?’

‘It was nothing. He would have been leaving anyway.’ Was that true? Whether it was or not, she didn’t have time to think about it now.

Luke had driven her home the previous evening, so she had to call a cab to take her into Canterbury where her car had been left. Once she was behind the wheel, she tried to put her muddled thoughts in order. There was no reason, from anything Tom had said, to suspect it was anything other than an accident. But given he was a possible suspect in Bethany’s death and now Karolyn’s as well, it couldn’t be a coincidence. She needed to know exactly what had happened.

When a prime suspect in a murder case inexplicably died, it was hard to see it as anything other than connected.

A couple of miles west of Elvington, the Shepherd’s Hill Race Circuit was a twenty-minute drive from Canterbury. It was only a few minutes off the A2, and the main gates were open, so Lexi was able to drive straight in.
