CHAPTER 5

“The Ukrainian is not exactly who he pretends to be,” Damien observed. “Our Eastern European sources suggest that he has not entirely turned his back on his Russian paymasters.”

“Well, maybe they have his family hostage?” Kyle replied beside him in the back of their limousine.

“Or we’ve been fed lousy information. Our grip on the Eastern European states has always been rather shaky at best. Ooh, communism really ruined that part of the world, eh?”

Kyle looked away. He would have whistled if he thought it appropriate.

“Something on your mind, Changeling?”

“Permission to speak freely, Shreen?”

“Go on.”

“How different is the system we are trying to impose on the world?”

“That’s different, Kyle! We’re not trying to tell them how to think, we’re simply improving the flow of people and goods. The next time you think we have no grip over this continent and the governments who run it, remember NAFTA.”

“They’re still keeping the Mexicans out, though, aren’t they?”

“Tchah! That’s just a formality! It is important that they maintain the illusion of borders for as long as possible. It’s only a matter of time. The fact of the matter is: without cheap, disposable labor for industries and food production, prices of everything will zoom.”

“Aren’t they doing that now?”

“At least till we secure the Middle Eastern pipe lines through Afghanistan and Iraq.”

“At the expense of the Afghans and Iraqis.”

Damien waved a dismissive hand, “Feel better now? This secret military government of theirs can only hurt us so much. Our ability to deploy their forces while keeping our European ones in reserve is proof that our dominion is guaranteed. Just you wait. Ooh! What are they doing now?”

Kyle’s eyes lost their brown tint and turned red. In the darkness, his Changeling vision could see far better than the best infrared camera.

“Looks like they’re kissing, sir.”

“Damien!”

“Yes, sir Damien. They’re kissing over by the river, from the looks of it.”

“This is starting to bore me. Are you sure the Council has sent no word yet?”

“Positive, sir. We are simply to observe till the go-ahead comes.”

“Hmm… is that his boyfriend?”

“Yes, sir…”

“Damien!”

“Yes, sir Damien…”

Damien sighed, then looked at the computer screen before him, “David Macintosh, the report here says. Could he be a double agent, too?”

“We have received no reported updates in the last hour, sir… I mean, Damien. But our eyes claim they’ve been going out for a little more than a month now. And that the Macintosh fellow has moved more clothes in.”

“I must say, they make a rather handsome couple, don’t they?”

“They do indeed, Damien.”

David paid no attention to the lights of New Jersey across the Hudson River. It was evening, and Kostya had taken him to the Hudson River Greenway not far from where the Ukrainian lived on the Upper West Side. When Kostya had first taken his hand, David had been shocked, and quickly pulled his hand away, but at the other man’s hurt look, he had relented.

While David did not exactly live in the closet, neither did he make it a point
