Chapter 4

I hid my smile as I observed the effusive goodbyes Adam got from everyone as we left. Especially my family members.

Our conversation flowed just as easily on the ride home as it had on the way there. We talked about his training as a surgeon, and my work, my family members he’d met, and he told me all about his own family.

It honestly seemed like our laughter was designed to blend together, producing the perfect melody of happiness.

I’d never talked to someone so easily on a date before. In fact, I don’t think I’d ever talked to anyone as easily as I could with Adam, ever.

But underlying our easy conversation was a sense of anticipation.

I pulled up into my garage.

Our eyes caught and, in that moment, all the unspoken want and need throbbed between us. His gaze was dark and intense.

“So this is it?” I got the feeling he was talking about more than my house.

“Um… yeah. Come on inside.” My voice sounded like a strangulated version of itself.

Adam followed me inside the house as I tried to keep my legs from wobbling like a newborn giraffe on one of those nature documentaries.

It was ridiculous. It wasn’t like I was some innocent virgin. But I couldn’t help the nerves that seemed to have clamped down in my stomach.

“You want a drink of anything?” I asked the inane question.

“Nah, I’m fine.”

When I turned to him, Adam was watching me, his eyes still deep and dark.

We stared at each other for a few heartbeats before he walked over to me.

“Hey,” he said. This time the smile was all in his eyes.

“Hey.” My voice was barely more than a whisper.

And then his lips were on mine.

He kissed me deep and dirty, his tongue meeting mine with a scorching heat that caused tingles to shoot through my body.

How could kissing Adam be so hot yet already feel so familiar? Like it was a new album-topping song I automatically knew all the words to.

Our kiss was alive with want and need.

I liked kissing, but kissing was usually the warm-up act to the main event, the teaser for all the good stuff that was coming.

But this kiss was everything. His wide, generous mouth that so often smiled, was gentle yet firm as it pressed against mine.

We staggered back onto my couch, still kissing. Kissing as he yanked at my shirt, kissing as his hands found my skin and left trails of fire everywhere he touched.

Kissing until I was a throbbing, panting mess.

He kissed down my neck, little butterfly kisses that continued to ignite my body.

“What do you want?” His whisper was a soft breeze against my skin.

“You won the bet, it’s your choice,” I rasped.

He paused, pulling back to study my face, his expression serious. “What are you up for?”

With him? “Anything.”

His eyes darkened and suddenly his mouth was back on mine, his tongue demanding entry as he kissed me so thoroughly I forgot my own name.

Finally, he pulled away, puffing.

“Bedroom?” he asked.

“Yeah.” I was pretty sure I couldn’t manage more than monosyllables at this point.
