Chapter Ten

Before Forever

Beauty awakens the soul to act.

(Dante Alighieri)

After I saw Peyton off, I drove home by myself. Jacari and Hez offered to stay the night with me. I had a lot on my mind and I needed some time to myself, so I declined their offer. I was five minutes from home when my cell phone started to chirp. I snatched the phone up from the passenger seat and answered it blindly.

“Hello.”

“Hi, Chi, it’s me Stormee. Are you busy? I thought you said you would call me,” Stormee cooed into the phone. Instantly, my stomach balled up in knots.

“Ahhh, I had stuff to do that took up most of my day. Look, Stormee, I think you’re great, but I think this thing between you and I is moving a little too fast for me. I think it would be best if we slowed things down a bit,” I sighed into the phone.

“Was it something I did, Chi? Did I do something wrong?” Stormee sniffled into the receiver. She wasn’t about to make this shit easy for me.

“Nah, I think we are moving way too fast. We hardly know one another and I’m sure you don’t wanna base this off of just sex,” I said hoping she didn’t make this any harder than it already was.

“Chi, if it’s something I did I wish you would just tell me so I can fix it. I want to make you happy. How can I make you happy if you don’t tell me what’s wrong? Chi, I need you.”

“I told you it ain’t you, it’s me. I think we jumped into this thing head first. I know you don’t know everything about me and I know I don’t know everything I need to know about you…”

“Why don’t you let me come over and spend the night with you so you can get to know me better,” she begged. Her pleading was disgusting me.

“Stormee, I don’t think it’s a good idea. I have a full day with my…. I mean with my brother’s wedding. Tonight is not a good night for us to be hanging out,” I sighed hoping she would hear the frustration in my voice.

“Oh, I understand. I don’t want to be a bother, Chi. I only wanted to spend some time with you, but if you’re busy, I guess I can catch up to you some other time,” Stormee said. Her voice was filled with disappointment. I had to admit I felt bad brushing her off and then it hit me. My guilt melted away like a hot knife cutting through cold butter. The entire scene with Jacari and Storm’s cousin played through my mind and replaced my guilt with anger. Stormee had lied to me. Sure I had told her more than one little fib, but her lie could land me in jail. It could also cause friction between me and Peyton and that was totally unacceptable.

“Stormee, what we had going on was fun, but I don’t think it’s going to work out.
