Chapter 28

Stampede

Scott suddenly opening up about his family surprised Sarah a little. Coming from a wealthy family back on Earth, though, she knew what lengths some families went through for the sake of their reputation.

Taking a deep breath, Scott continued with his story.

“My mother was from a small family, and my dad pressured her family to arrange a marriage between them. My dad said he fell in love with my mother at first sight, but my mother hated him for it.

“For the first eight years of my life, my mother couldn’t stand the sight of me or my father. It got to a point where she would outright attack me if we were alone.

“I found out the truth later on. My father had told my mother he would eradicate her entire family if she didn’t marry him, and if he or any children they bore died, then her family would suffer endless torture. So, my mother didn’t kill my father, but instead tried different things such as castrating him.

“She had somebody she loved before my father came along. I recently discovered that they were to be married a mere week before my father entered her life. From that moment on, she resented my whole family—including me, an innocent child.

“My mother died when I was nine years old from complications during childbirth. My youngest sister never took her first breath before dying with my mother.

“Since then, I’ve hated my father. I would kill him, if only the Sword Sect would let me. Most of my family is an elder or elite disciple. Any of them would kill each other outside the sect if it meant they’d gain from it.

“The Sword Sect has rules about bullying families inside and outside the sect, but my father is an elite elder and a main pillar of one of the biggest families in the sect. Who would want to get on his bad side by reporting him to the sect?

“The answer is nobody. Not even the backstabbers in the family would report one of their own to the sect because that could lead to the family losing political powers.

“It was my father who ordered me to study poison from you. He never told me the reason, though. If he’s trying to get second-hand knowledge about poisons out of me, he will be disappointed.

“I would never share my poison knowledge with my family. They’ve already tried gaining some of the knowledge as they tried to read my notes, but I write in code that can’t be broken.

“They would only use that knowledge to kill. You said poisons can cure, but my family would never see it that way. Not unless it was for their own gain somehow.”

After a minute of complete silence, Sarah felt the need to express her pity.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

To her surprise, Scott didn’t reply. He stood up and walked away from the camp.

He must be thinking about his family. I never know what to say or how to act during these moments.
