Chapter Thirty-four

‘Three little girls went out to play, but only two came home that day . . .’ I wonder at the pain this memory still causes me. It’s like a blow to my chest, stealing my breath away. Surely the agony should have become dulled by time, but no, I can see her face so clearly. If I stare hard enough into the recesses of my mind, she becomes confused with others in the ice.

So many terrified people screaming for me to save them, to get them warm . . .

The water was always so very bitterly cold, I drew back immediately, my hand pinched and white. When they climbed in, they often cried out, bodies rigid, an uncontrollable spasm of terror and instinctive reaction to the ice.

I could almost block out the noises, but not the smell of fear, the sight of death crouching next to them, pulling them slowly closer as their bodies shut down, the shaking lessened and their core temperature dropped. Unconsciousness followed, and by then, it was almost always too late. I came to realize quite soon that all the warmth from the outside made no difference if you were frozen inside, and I wondered that I seemed to be the only person in the room who had figured it out.

It seemed so obvious. If you have a core of ice, warmth must start from the inside out, or the body will never recover properly. I could have said this at any time, but I kept quiet. My opinions would never have been welcome because to the doctors, I wasn’t human, merely a subject to be used in the name of medical science.

But as each person died, I felt a little crystal of ice lodge deep within my heart, as though it was a final gift them to me — our skin touching, final breaths intermingling, until at last they were gone.
