The Fourth Phase – The Blitz

The original purpose for the Battle of Britain had vanished. On 6 October, with the raids on London not having the decisive impact that had been anticipated and with the Luftwaffe suffering increasing losses, daylight attacks came to an end and were replaced with night attacks, known to the British as ‘the Blitz’, which would last through the winter. This move was a tacit acknowledgement by the Germans that the Battle of Britain had been lost, and that Hitler was no longer interested in the raids as a precursor to an invasion. ‘Sea Lion’ was formally cancelled on 12 October, but attacks on London continued for another 76 consecutive nights (except for the single night of 2 November), before coming to an end in 1941.
