Chapter Twenty-Six

Stevie

Stevie arrived to find her mother pale and tired, lying on her couch covered in a heap of blankets. Randy rushed to Patricia’s side and began the process of healing her of the flu virus. Ruth stood in the doorway with a rare gleam in her eye, watching him work his powerful magic.

Alice hovered beside the couch, just as pale and shaken as Patricia.

Concerned, Stevie wrinkled her brow. “Alice, are you sick too?”

“Me? No, dear. I’m okay.” Alice wrung her hands. Her worried gaze never wavered from Patricia.

“Mom will be fine.” Stevie patted her shoulder. “Randy will have her feeling better in no time. He just did the same for Charlie.”

Alice frowned. “Randy can’t fix—”

“Not now, Alice.” Patricia coughed. “Wait for the others.”

Stevie glanced between the two women, alarmed. “What’s going on?”

Alice shook her head as tears welled in her eyes. She began to pace across the living room.

Randy finished healing Patricia and helped her sit upright. Color had returned to her face, and she pushed her blankets off. “Thank you, Randy.” She glanced down at her long, flannel nightgown. “I’ll be back in a minute. I just need to get dressed.”

Stevie heard the front door swing open. She peered down the hallway and spotted Lexi and Deborah walking toward the den.

“We’re here.” Lexi wrapped an arm around Stevie. “How’s Charlie?”

“He’s good. Randy took care of him.” Stevie tilted her head. “Why are you here?”

“Alice called and told us to come over right away.” She raised her chin in the senior witch’s direction. “She said it was urgent. What’s going on?”

All of the witches looked to Alice for an explanation.

Her knuckles grew redder from her fervent hand wringing. “You should all probably sit down.”

Stevie had never seen Alice so distraught before. She couldn’t bring herself to sit down. Locked in a whirlwind of fret and uncertainty, she knew something was very wrong. She cast a worried glance at Lexi, whose furrowed brow echoed her own concerns. No one uttered a word.

Ruth inched closer to Randy and grabbed his hand.

With heavy steps, Patricia returned to the den. She’d brushed her hair and changed into an ankle length, navy blue dress with a batik design along the hem. Though all signs of her illness had vanished, her deep frown remained. “Yes, please. Everyone take a seat.” She gestured toward the couch and chairs. “You too, Alice. You look like you might faint.”

Alice nodded and followed Patricia’s direction, as did everyone else. They waited in silence for their queen to speak. Stevie wiped her palms on her jeans, studying the pained expression on her mother’s face and dreading whatever she was about to say.

Patricia drew in a deep breath. “The amulet has been stolen.”

The queen’s words crashed through the stillness of the room. Stevie’s mouth fell open, and her shoulders hunched forward as though she’d taken a punch to her stomach. She braced her hands against her knees, steeling herself for more.

“I have no idea who took the amulet, but I’m certain it was a man.
