Kellen was almost asleep when Anming stumbled in much later.

His bond mate smelled of outlyner shine. Of course they’d been drinking—he should’ve known.

Kellen opened his eyes and propped himself up on one elbow to watch Anming pull his tunic over his head. In the faint moonlight that seeped into the tent Anming’s tanned skin, his lean torso with its taut muscles made his heart beat faster.

In the next moment Anming lay down next to him, pulling him closer. He smelled of sweat and shine and his own earthy scent. He put his hand on Kellen’s hair, clumsily raking a fingernail across his cheek on the way there.

“Anming.”

Anming stopped, his hand heavy on Kellen’s head. Then he stirred, as if just remembering. “We need to talk, right?”

“Well, yes.”

Anming shifted to lie on his back. “Was gonna tell you before about all this,” he said. “Marks took forever to decide, and then when he said you could come it was almost the last minute.” He reached a hand toward Kellen. Kellen grasped it with his own. “I didn’t know until just before I told you. I didn’t want to tell you and have you thinking about it, and then have them say no.”

“But you didn’t even ask me if I wanted to go in the first place,” Kellen said. “The whole thing was a surprise to me, and then I barely had time to make up my mind.”

Anming’s eyes had closed. “Anming.” Kellen squeezed his hand, and his bond mate blinked, turning bleary eyes toward him. “You have to tell me these things from now on. All right? I have to make my own decisions. You can’t decide for me.”

He stared down at Anming. Anming was drunk but Kellen really needed him to hear what he was saying. “Please. Don’t put me through that again.”

He hated the way it sounded—like he was weak and Anming was the strong one, but something in his tone finally got through to Anming. “I won’t,” Anming said. “I’m sorry.”

Kellen felt a tightness in his chest suddenly let go. He didn’t even know it had been there. He forgot everything else he wanted to say. Anming understood him now.

Anming pulled him down for a kiss and Kellen went willingly, opening his mouth and his heart to his bond mate.
