“After that, I don’t know,” Ted told George Shaw. He shook his head wistfully. “Poor Paul, he looked sick. Because that Barbara is a real sweet chick. You know her?”

“I’ve talked to her,” said Shaw. He’d talked to her, she’d talked to him. But she hadn’t mentioned Gally or Cat Catson’s party. What else had she held back?

“In a way it was funny,” said Ted. “When Barbara came in with this Connor character, I took a look at Paul. I thought, here’s a boy caught with his thumbs in the jam-jar. I was right. Barbara really rubbed it in, and in a real cool way. She just pretended nothing had happened. But she was mad. I saw her looking over the lil gal Paul had come in with, and she was asking herself, ‘What’s she got I haven’t got?’”

“Do you know the other girl’s name?”

“Gally, that’s what they called her. I don’t know her last name, but I’ve seen her around the neighborhood.”

Shaw nodded. “Thanks for your help. If you think of anything else, will you give me a call? Lieutenant George Shaw.”

“I’ll certainly do that, Lieutenant.”

By now Ainsworth should be home from school. Shaw walked back to the Bethea house. There was also Gally to talk to, because if Barbara Tavistock had been withholding information, the same applied to Gally.

Shaw pushed open the creaky iron gate, entered the Bethea yard. He climbed the creaking steps, crossed the porch, rang the bell. The door opened, Vinnie’s anxious face appeared.

“I’m back again, Mrs. Bethea,” said Shaw. “Is Ainsworth home yet?”

“Yes, he’s been home several minutes.”

“You didn’t mention I wanted to talk to him?”

“No sir, I did not.” Vinnie resignedly stepped back from the door. “You want to come in, I guess. I’ll call Ainsworth.”

“I’d like to see him alone, please. And before I go I want to talk to Gally.”

“Gally ain’t here. She took off.”

“Where’d she go?”

Vinnie’s voice was tired and cantankerous. “That I can’t say. I give up on her. She’s old enough to look out for herself now. Any trouble she gets in that’s her doing, not mine.”

Shaw said, “I’ll talk to Ainsworth.”
