Chapter 4

Mya

The train car had been steeped in silent tension for over thirty minutes. Mya had never seen her father get mildly upset, but somehow Elise had pissed him the fuck off. He’d gotten to where he was slamming his hands against the backs of the plush train seats to emphasize the things he was saying. It had made her uncomfortable that he didn’t listen to reason, not from her and not from Erick before Erick had peaced out and left the train car all together.

Mya now thought she should have followed Erick when he left, but she didn’t want to leave her dad there. She just thought it would be a bad idea to step away while he was acting so strange. Now that the three of them were sitting in the train car, listening to the train move along the tracks and hopefully cooling down so no one had another blowup, Mya decided it was as good a time as any to make her move and go see what all the other passengers were up to.

The college student stood up from her seat and tried to be as nonchalant as possible when she told her dad she was going to the dining car to get a snack. Elise nodded in understanding, but didn’t seem to care at all. Mya gave a dismissive roll of her eyes and walked through the sliding doors and into the next car. She was moving so fast that she ran right into Tara who must have been speeding in the opposite direction.

“Mya!” Tara’s eyes very obviously devoured the younger woman from head to toe in an instant and she slipped a hand around Mya’s waist.

“Sorry, I was just heading to the dining car. My dad has been in a mood since you all left and I think that Elise woman just knows how to push buttons. I didn’t even know he had.”

Tara knitted her eyebrows at that. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, they’ve been at each other’s throats pretty much the entire time we’ve been there. Eri…” She caught herself there. It felt strange to sound say his name with such familiarity to her. “Your husband…he couldn’t even take it. He had to leave and go find you. I assumed he’d tell you all about it.”

“No, we talked about other things. Hey, do you have your train ticket on you?”

“My dad has our tickets. Why? Did you learn something?”

“Maybe…” The arm around the small of Mya’s back slipped away as Tara maneuvered around her and started toward Elise and Mya’s father.

“Wait! I want to know what you figured out.”

The two women stepped back into the train car, which remained in the tableau of irritation that Mya had left behind. She could see the tension clearly stop Tara in her tracks. The blonde looked back and forth between the two adults, sitting silently with their heads in their phones.

“Can I have your tickets?” Tara interrupted them both and then giggled at how the statement made her sound like a conductor.
